As a developer, I don't want to pay for every tool before I know whether a project is worth building.
When working on a prototype, a small feature, or an AI-assisted coding experiment, I usually start by looking for tools that offer a genuinely useful free option.
If the project grows, attracts users, or needs more capacity, upgrading becomes a decision based on real needs rather than a requirement from day one.
The tools I look for
1. API development and testing
Tools that help me test endpoints, inspect responses, and debug integrations without adding unnecessary costs.
2. Database management
Free database clients that make it easier to inspect data, run queries, and work across different projects.
3. Mock APIs and frontend development
When the backend isn't ready, a mock API can help me keep building and testing the frontend.
4. Deployment and hosting
Free tiers are useful for prototypes and small projects, provided their limits and production restrictions are understood.
5. Monitoring and networking
As projects move beyond local development, I look for ways to monitor services and securely access development environments.
Free doesn't always mean unlimited
A tool can be free and still have meaningful restrictions.
Before choosing one, I try to understand:
- Which features are available without paying?
- Are there limits on usage, projects, users, or resources?
- Is a payment card required?
- Can I continue using it for a personal project?
- What would trigger the need to upgrade?
Open-source software and proprietary services with free tiers are also different. Both can be useful, but they should be clearly identified.
A community resource
I'm collecting useful tools in Awesome Free Dev Tools, a public resource for developers, indie hackers, and people experimenting with AI-assisted development.
I'd like this to become more than another list of links. The goal is to help developers find practical tools, understand their limitations, and start building without paying for everything upfront.
If you know a useful free developer tool, feel free to explore the repository and contribute.
