Renewing Your Driving Licence in Malaysia (2026): MyJPJ App, JPJ Counter & Pos Malaysia

Malaysian driving licences need renewal every 3 or 5 years. The good news: you can do it in 10 minutes from your phone. The bad news: driving on an expired licence is an RM300 compound minimum. Here is the complete guide.

TL;DR

  • Easiest method: MyJPJ app — renew in under 10 min, pay online, no physical card needed
  • At counter: Any JPJ office or selected Pos Malaysia branches
  • Fee: RM30 (3-year) or RM50 (5-year) for Class D car licence
  • Expired under 3 years: Renew normally, no penalty
  • Expired over 3 years: Full re-examination required (theory + practical)

Option A: Online via MyJPJ App (Recommended)

  1. Download MyJPJ from Google Play or App Store
  2. Log in with your MyKad IC number + OTP to your registered Malaysian mobile
  3. Tap Lesen Memandu → Perbaharui Lesen
  4. Confirm your licence details
  5. Select renewal period (1, 3, or 5 years)
  6. Pay via FPX, credit/debit card, or Touch n Go eWallet
  7. Done — your licence is updated in JPJ database immediately

No physical card needed. Since 2019, the digital licence in MyJPJ is legally valid. Traffic police check the database in real time.

Option B: JPJ Counter (Walk-In)

  1. Bring your MyKad (original) and existing licence
  2. Take a number at the Lesen Memandu / Perbaharui queue
  3. Pay the fee at the counter
  4. If you want a new physical card, pay an extra RM20 (photo taken on-site)

Office hours: Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm (1–2pm lunch closure in some states).

Option C: Pos Malaysia (Selected Branches)

Not all post offices offer this — call first to confirm. The process is identical to a JPJ counter. The receipt updates the JPJ system immediately.

Alternatively, JPJ-registered MySikap agents (driving academies, certain petrol stations) can also process renewals.

Renewal Fees (2026)

Licence Class Vehicles 3-Year Fee 5-Year Fee
D (lesen kereta) Private motor car (manual & auto) RM30 RM50
DA Auto-transmission only RM30 RM50
B Motorcycle above 250cc RM30 RM50
B2 Motorcycle up to 250cc RM30 RM50
C1 Light goods vehicle RM50 RM80
C Heavy goods vehicle RM50 RM80
GDL Commercial goods licence RM50 RM80

Hold both Class D + Class B2? You pay for each class separately (e.g. RM30 + RM30 = RM60 for 3 years), but it is one transaction, one renewal.

What If My Licence Has Expired?

Expired less than 3 years → Renew normally via the methods above. No penalty fee. You just lose the time you did not renew.

Expired more than 3 years → Under JPJ regulations, your licence is permanently lapsed. You must restart from scratch: driving school, KPP theory test, JPJ practical test. Same as a brand-new applicant.

Driving with an expired licence = RM300 compound minimum under the Road Transport Act 1987. Your car insurance may also be invalidated for any accident while unlicensed.

Probationary (P) Licence — Special Rules

  • P licence valid for 2 years
  • After 2 years with no serious demerit points, automatically upgraded to full licence — no test required
  • Must display the red P sticker front and rear while on P licence
  • Check your P status in the MyJPJ app → Maklumat Lesen

Documents Checklist

For MyJPJ online:

  • [ ] MyKad IC number
  • [ ] Registered Malaysian mobile number (for OTP)
  • [ ] Payment method (FPX / card / TnG eWallet)

For JPJ counter or Pos Malaysia:

  • [ ] MyKad (original)
  • [ ] Existing driving licence (even if expired)
  • [ ] Payment (cash or card)

Pro Tips

  • Renew up to 6 months early — you do not lose validity. Your new expiry date starts from your previous expiry date, not from today. Renewing 3 months early still gives you the full 3 or 5 years from your last expiry.
  • Online renewal does not update your address. If you have moved, visit a JPJ counter to update your address via MySikap — otherwise summons and correspondence go to the wrong address.
  • Check demerit points before renewal. Via MyJPJ app → Maklumat Lesen, or at any JPJ counter. Accumulated points under SPPT (Sistem Poin Penalti Trafik) can affect your licence status.
  • GDL holders: medical exam required every 5 years. Private car and motorcycle licence holders do not need a medical exam for standard renewal.
  • Set a calendar reminder 6 months before expiry. A 3- or 5-year validity is easy to forget. An expired licence discovered at a roadblock is a minimum RM300 fine.

FAQ

Can I drive immediately after renewing online?
Yes. Payment confirmation = immediate database update. Traffic police check the database, not a physical card.

My licence expired 4 years ago. Can I still renew?
No. Over 3 years expired = permanently lapsed. Must restart: driving school, KPP theory test, JPJ practical test.

I hold Class D and Class B2. Do I renew separately?
No — one transaction, both classes renewed together. You pay the fee for each class (RM30 + RM30 = RM60 for 3 years).

What is Class DA vs Class D?
Class D covers all cars (manual and automatic). Class DA is automatic-only. If you learned in an auto and want to drive manual, you need a separate JPJ practical test to upgrade from DA to D.

Can I renew from overseas?
Yes, via MyJPJ app — you need your IC number and an active Malaysian mobile for OTP. If your Malaysian number is inactive, ask a family member to renew at a JPJ counter with an authorisation letter.
