It is the same as testing your code yourself as a software developer: you also know how to code, otherwise you would not even know what to test…
It allows for easier and more clear communication between the developer and the tester too, which is particularly (not especially, as it is ALWAYS, whatever size) important in more complex projects.
There might not be a need to be fluent in let’s say JavaScript or Java, but knowing your way round as a tester can help you massively.
Also, why not learn to code while working in a technical position like a software tester, right? Sounds pretty odd to me that a tester would not be interested, but this is just my opinion.
