I Run a Free AI Prompt Library: Content SEO Lessons

A year ago I launched PromptSeen, a free library of copy-paste AI prompts for everyday creators. No funding, no team, no ads budget — just a static-ish site and a publishing habit. Along the way I learned a handful of content SEO lessons that translate well beyond the AI-prompts niche.

1. Search intent beats search volume

Most prompt libraries chase head terms like "AI prompts." Those are dominated by huge domains. I targeted long-tail intent instead: people searching for a specific, ready-to-use prompt — "Halloween couple AI photo prompts," "birthday CapCut template," "Diwali video prompt." Each page answers one exact query with a ready-to-paste result. Traffic per page is small, but conversion (and return visits) is excellent.

2. Ship the answer above the fold

AI Overviews and featured snippets skim your page. I put the copyable prompt block first, explanation after. Pages structured this way consistently earn more impressions, because Google can lift a clean, self-contained answer directly from the top of the page.

3. Programmatic pages need a human voice

Scaling from 10 pages to 200 with templates is tempting, but thin duplicates die in indexing. My rule: every page gets at least one hand-written section — a tip, an example variation, a caveat. It slows publishing by minutes per page and visibly improves crawl rates.

4. Internal linking is the whole game

Niche sites live or die on crawl depth. Every new page links to siblings in the same cluster (Halloween prompts link to each other, festival templates link to each other) and back to the homepage. I use descriptive anchor text, not "click here." The cluster pages now rank for terms I never explicitly targeted.

5. Freshness matters more than polish

AI tools change monthly, so prompts rot fast. I re-verify and refresh the top 20% of pages every quarter instead of redesigning the site. Old pages that stopped ranking came back after a genuine update — not a timestamp change, but real content added.

6. Free can be a business model

Everything on PromptSeen is free with no account required. Removing the signup wall tripled return visits, and the "free forever" positioning earns natural backlinks from forums and social posts — the kind of links money can't easily buy.

The short version: answer one exact query per page, put the answer first, add a human touch, link your clusters, and keep them fresh. It's unglamorous SEO, but it works for independent publishers.
