"Just use rotating proxies" is common advice and mostly right, but it is thrown around without explaining what rotation does, when it helps, and when it quietly hurts. Rotation is a tool, not a magic setting. Used on the right task it turns a job that gets blocked in minutes into one that runs clean for hours. Used on the wrong task it breaks sessions and makes accounts look suspicious. Knowing the difference is the whole skill.
What rotation actually does
A rotating proxy is a pool of addresses that automatically serves a fresh IP, either on every request or on a set interval. The point is frequency. Anti-bot systems flag an address that makes too many requests too fast, so spreading those requests across many addresses keeps each one under a natural rate. Nothing about your requests changes except where they appear to come from, and that single change is enough to defeat the most common form of rate limiting.
When rotation is exactly right
Rotation shines on stateless, high-volume work: scraping large sites, collecting search results, checking prices across thousands of pages, mass registration where each action should look like a new visitor. In all of these, no single request needs to remember the last one, so a fresh address per request is free upside. Rotating proxies let you push volume that a single address could never sustain without tripping a limit.
When rotation is the wrong choice
Rotation breaks anything that depends on continuity. A logged-in session, a shopping cart, a multi-step form, or an account you are warming up all expect the same origin from one request to the next. Rotate mid-session and the site sees your identity teleport between addresses, which is more suspicious than a single stable IP would ever be. For stateful work you want a pinned address, not rotation, and confusing the two is a common cause of self-inflicted blocks.
