Your CLAUDE.md is sent as context at the start of every Claude Code session. A 3,000-token file used in 10 sessions a day is about 900,000 tokens a month before you have asked for anything. Whether that matters depends on your plan and caching, but it is worth knowing the number.
I built a single-page calculator: paste your file, set sessions per day and your model's input price per million tokens, and it shows tokens, lines and monthly cost at list price. It runs entirely in the browser, nothing is uploaded, and the source is one HTML file you can read.

Caveats
- Token count is characters divided by four. Real tokenization differs, so treat it as a rough guide.
- It ignores prompt caching, which can cut the effective cost of repeated context substantially.
- Enter the current price for your model; I did not hard-code one because prices change.
If the number is high
- Keep the file under ~100 lines: exact commands, non-obvious layout, repeated rules.
- Move multi-step procedures into skills, which load only when invoked.
- Remove rules your linter or type checker already enforces.
