This is my submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass.
What I Built
I built CuriousLenz, an AI-powered web application that allows users to upload an image and receive an AI-generated explanation.
The goal is to make image understanding simple and accessible through an easy-to-use web interface. Users can upload an image and explore what the AI can identify or explain about it.
For the Touch Grass theme, I see potential for CuriousLenz to help people learn more about things they encounter in the real world, including objects and scenes they photograph outdoors. My goal is to make AI a tool for curiosity and real-world exploration, rather than just another reason to stay in front of a screen.
Demo
Try uploading an image and see CuriousLenz generate an AI-powered response.

The repository contains the frontend and backend code used to build the application.
How I Built It
I built CuriousLenz using:
React for the frontend interface.
Node.js for the backend API.
Groq API to access a vision-capable AI model.
Vercel to deploy the frontend.
Render to deploy the backend.
The application sends the uploaded image to the backend, which prepares the request for the vision model and returns the generated response to the frontend.
Building this project helped me learn how to integrate AI into a full-stack web application, manage API credentials through environment variables, and deploy frontend and backend services separately.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation helps developers learn from existing tools, experiment with new ideas, and make AI-powered applications more accessible.
Open-weight models and open-source frameworks can give developers more flexibility to inspect, adapt, and build on available technology. They can also create opportunities to experiment with different deployment approaches and reduce dependence on a single provider.
For projects like CuriousLenz, an open ecosystem makes it easier to learn, collaborate, and keep improving the application.
I want to continue developing CuriousLenz into a tool that encourages curiosity and helps people understand more of the world around them.
