Claude Code's Real Limit Isn't Daily — It's a Weekly Cap Our Own Pricing Page Never Mentions

We keep a pricing page for Claude Code, and this week we checked it against what Claude Code users have actually been reporting — not against a vendor doc. It didn't hold up.

Our page frames everything as a daily allowance: Pro gets a "base rate limit," Max 5x gets "roughly five times the daily message capacity," and Max 20x "removes rate limits for even heavy users." The word "weekly" doesn't appear on the page once.

That framing is incomplete. Anthropic runs Claude Code against a weekly usage cap in addition to the shorter daily/session throttling — the 5x and 20x multipliers apply to that weekly allowance, not just a per-day one. And this week that distinction is the whole story: Anthropic has been running a temporary 50% increase to the weekly limit since July 2026, extended multiple times and currently running through at least August 19–31, which means what "hitting a limit" feels like has been shifting for users even without a plan change.

What's actually being reported right now

Four Hacker News threads converged on this in the last 24 hours, including a front-page-scale one (251 points, 219 comments) on the weekly-limits promotion itself. The complaint worth taking seriously: multiple users on the top Max 20x tier report their weekly allowance depleting at roughly the 5x tier's rate, not 20x — the multiplier Anthropic advertises isn't reliably showing up in practice.

We can't independently verify individual usage reports — Anthropic doesn't publish exact token budgets for any tier, which is itself part of the problem. But the pattern is consistent enough, across enough separate threads this week, that "the 20x tier removes rate limits for even heavy users" is not a claim we should be making flatly on our own page anymore.

What we're changing

  • Stating plainly that Claude Code is governed by a weekly cap, not just a daily one, and that the 5x/20x multipliers are Anthropic's stated ratio against that weekly allowance — not a guaranteed real-world outcome.
  • Telling readers to check their own account's usage dashboard rather than assume the multiplier holds, especially on Max 20x.
  • Noting the current temporary 50% weekly-limit increase (through at least Aug 31) as context for why usage has felt inconsistent even for people who haven't changed plans.
  • Mentioning that recent Claude Code releases now auto-resume a session once a usage limit resets, which changes what actually "hitting a limit" costs you mid-task.
