Aura Pro: The isDemo Handoff - Why the Rebuild You Do After Purchase Is Where Most App Takeovers Break

You can buy a working Android app. That is the part people believe.

The part nobody plans for is the thirty seconds after the money moves: you have a DEMO badge over every premium feature, BillingClient 6.2.0 is wired but dormant, and two product IDs (com.auraprompt.app.premium_monthly, com.auraprompt.app.premium_annual) that exist nowhere except in the source tree. You are holding a signed APK that cannot earn anything yet.

This is the isDemo handoff. Aura Pro is a $299.99 AI prompt-generation app for Android that ships you a complete takeover path - signed app-release.apk, play_takeover.py, upload_to_play.py, and two READMEs. The demo APK runs with isDemo=true, which unlocks all 11 categories with no paywall. The version that actually bills runs with isDemo=false, and billing only functions once the products exist in your Play Console.

Both halves have to be true at the same time. Here is the checklist.

1. isDemo=true is a test harness, not a product

Demo mode exists so you can verify the app before spending money - all 11 intent categories (Build, Write, Design, Learn, Marketing, Business, Personal, Finance, Legal, Debug, Analysis) route correctly, no API key is needed, everything runs on-device. That is the point: you install it, you try it, you decide.

What demo mode is not is the thing you publish. Publishing the demo APK is not a shortcut, because you would be shipping an app with the paywall switched off.

2. A flag flip with no flag flip

You do not "turn on" billing. You rebuild the APK with isDemo=false, and the app's behaviour changes: the DEMO badge goes away and the premium gate goes live.

The rebuild is also where a hand-built replacement usually diverges from the original. If you rebuild from source and it no longer matches the signed APK you tested, the thing you paid for and the thing you ship are two different artifacts. Test the artifact you are actually going to publish.

3. Two product IDs, one of them yours

The premium subscriptions are defined in the code as com.auraprompt.app.premium_monthly and com.auraprompt.app.premium_annual. You cannot simply name them whatever you like and expect the app to bill.

The products must be created in your own Play Console after takeover, under exactly those IDs. play_takeover.py handles in-app products, subscription products, and track activation through the Play Developer API - but the Console is yours, and the IDs are a contract between the script and the app. Rename one side and the app looks for a product that does not exist.

4. The six steps the API cannot do for you

play_takeover.py --key key.json does everything the Play Developer API allows: APK upload, store listing (auto-filled from the app's own content), store images, in-app products, subscription products, track activation, and publish. It does not do the six manual Console steps - Data Safety, content rating, category, pricing, review submission, and push notifications. Those are human decisions about your account, and no script can make them. Budget for them instead of being surprised by them.

5. The signing key is the real handoff

You get a choice: include aura-release.keystore, or take the full aura-pro/ source tree and sign future updates with your own key. If you are not sure which one you want, take the source. You can always generate a new key. You cannot recover a lost one - Google Play App Signing enforces that, and it is not negotiable.

Where to actually test it

Both halves are testable before you pay, which is the whole reason this is a sane purchase instead of a gamble:

  • The generation logic - there is a working prompt-generator demo on the Aura Pro page. Type a topic, pick one of the 11 categories, and read the structured prompt it produces. That is the same logic that runs on-device.
  • The takeover path - install the demo APK (aura-pro-demo.apk, 3.7 MB) and confirm the categories route correctly, the UI looks professional, and nothing crashes or renders blank.

Test the first, verify the second, and the rebuild is a rebuild instead of a surprise.
