A Gumroad Store With 39 Products and No Visitors (What I Got Wrong About Distribution)

I built 39 products and got almost no sales. For a while I thought the products were bad.

They were not. The problem was simpler and more embarrassing: I had built a cash register and expected it to bring customers.

The mistake, stated plainly

A marketplace like Gumroad does three things well. It takes payment, it delivers files, and it handles tax. It does not send you buyers. Listing on a marketplace is like opening a shop in a town with no roads leading to it.

I had confused being available for sale with being found. Those are two different jobs, and only one of them was done.

What a storefront actually needs

Every sale is a chain: attention, then trust, then payment. A product page can only serve the last link. The first two have to come from somewhere else.

So I built the part I had skipped:

  • Many small pages, each for one specific search. Not "stickers", but "cute dinosaur stickers PNG for Cricut". Long-tail phrases are how strangers find you without an ad budget.
  • A free entry point. A free sampler that requires no email. Free removes the risk; a real file builds trust faster than any landing page.
  • A hub that links it all together. Every page points back to the free sampler, and the sampler points to the paid packs.
  • A couple of quiet social accounts posting as a person, not a brand, because the algorithm punishes automation that has no human behind it.

The funnel, in one line

Attention leads to trust leads to sale. Every page I write exists to move someone one step down that line, and nothing else.

The free sampler is the hinge. It costs me nothing to give away and it converts a stranger into someone who has already held the product in their hands.

What went wrong, and the fixes

  • Empty covers. Every product launched without a cover image, the single biggest conversion factor on a marketplace. Fixed by automating covers.
  • No way in for free. A wall in front of the first interaction kills the top of the funnel. The sampler is now free, no email.
  • Waiting for the marketplace to promote me. It will not. Distribution is my job, not the platform's.
  • One big page instead of many small ones. Ranking is won by specific pages that match what people already type, not by one polished homepage.

The honest scoreboard

Sales are still low. I am not going to pretend otherwise. But the fix is no longer a mystery, and it is no longer the product's fault. It is a distribution job, and it is the one I am now doing.

If you are stuck at zero sales with good products, you are probably not bad at making things. You are just missing the roads.
