I built a weekly pipeline that scrapes pricing, discount, and review data from Steam. Here's what the data shows after the first few weeks of collection.
The Dataset
109 games tracked from Steam's top sellers, new releases, specials, and featured categories. 30 fields per game including price, discount %, genres, developers, publishers, review scores, review counts, metacritic score, platform support, DLC count, achievements, and more. Updated every Monday. Available in CSV and JSON.
Key Findings
Pricing Landscape
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Average price | $21.36 |
| Games on discount | 52% |
| Average discount depth | 22.3% |
| Price range | $0 (F2P) to $69.99 (AAA) |
| Free-to-play share | ~14% |
Pricing by Genre
| Genre | Avg Price | Avg Review % | On Sale |
|---|---|---|---|
| RPG | $34.81 | 78% | 47% |
| Simulation | $19.93 | 80% | 53% |
| Adventure | $18.94 | 83% | 55% |
| Action | $16.82 | 79% | 51% |
| Indie | $13.57 | 85% | 54% |
| Casual | $9.45 | 82% | 42% |
RPGs are the most expensive genre by a wide margin, but don't score higher in reviews. Indie games underprice themselves relative to their excellent review scores.
Discounts Are the Norm
More than half of all tracked games are on sale right now. The average discount of 22.3% means Steam users have been trained to expect deals. If you're launching a game, your pricing strategy needs to account for this — customers will wait for a sale.
Price vs Quality: No Correlation
The correlation between price and review score is essentially zero (r ≈ 0.12). Indie games ($13.57 avg) score 85% while RPGs ($34.81) score 78%. Higher price doesn't mean higher quality — it means higher expectations.
Platform Support
- Windows: 100%
- Mac: 63%
- Linux: 48%
Linux support is higher than many assume — nearly half of tracked titles support it.
Total Reviews
- 33.9 million total reviews across 109 games
- Average 310k reviews per game
- Average review score: 81.4%
Where the Data Comes From
