What Anthropic actually shipped On 27 August 2026 Anthropic opened a research preview of something called the Model Hardware Standard. Strip away the announcement language and it is a shared specification for one narrow problem: how an AI agent discovers a physical device, talks to it, and operates it without breaking anything. The devices named are the ones that populate a research laboratory or a production line — robotic arms, microscopes, liquid handlers. The mechanism is a driver.
