What changed, and what is only reported Google announced a leadership reset at Google DeepMind on 5 August 2026. Demis Hassabis stepped back from the chief executive role to become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. He remains head of Isomorphic Labs, the drug-discovery spinout. Koray Kavukcuoglu took over day-to-day leadership as senior vice-president of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai. He had been the lab's chief technology officer since January 2024 and has spent more than 13 years there. His remit covers Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams.
