What changed on 15 July Thinking Machines Lab — the research company founded by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati — released Inkling on 15 July 2026. It is the lab's first production model and its first open-weights model, trained from scratch rather than adapted from anything that came before. It did not arrive as a preview, a waitlist or a promise of weights to follow: the full weights went up on Hugging Face on day one, under the Apache 2.0 licence, with same-day fine-tuning available on the company's own Tinker platform.
