Why this bites AI builders harder than other engineers Every employed engineer has in principle the same problem. In practice, AI builders have a much sharper version of it, for three reasons that compound. The first is that in this field your proof of work is your portfolio. Hiring in AI engineering has moved decisively towards evidence over credentials, and the artefact that carries the most weight — a working system, a merged contribution, an eval harness with committed results — is a thing you publish. An engineer who cannot publish anything is competing with one hand tied. The second is that the thing you most want to build on a Saturday is usually the thing closest to what you do on a Tuesday.
