What changed On 16 August 2026, Bloomberg reported that Stripe had finalised an agreement to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7bn. Other outlets put the number differently — the New York Times reported $7.5bn, Axios described a deal worth more than $8bn in cash and stock — and none of them are Stripe. We will use the Bloomberg floor throughout this piece, because it is the most conservative figure from the most-cited source, and because the exact number matters less than the multiple. The multiple is the story. In May 2026, OpenRouter raised a $113m Series B at a reported $1.3bn valuation, which we covered at the time in OpenRouter's $113m Series B.
