The take-home is the new interview As of June 2026, if you are interviewing for an AI engineering role in Bengaluru or London, the moment that decides the outcome is rarely a live coding round and almost never a quiz on transformer internals. It is the take-home: a scoped brief — build a retrieval system, an evaluation harness, a small agent — that you take away, build over an evening or a weekend, and submit as a repository with a README. Technical interviews have become increasingly project-based, and for good reason.
