Model card, system card, technical file: three documents, three jobs The model card is the one everyone has read. It was introduced by Mitchell and colleagues in 2019, at Google, and its stated lineage is deliberately unglamorous: nutrition labels on food, datasheets for electronic components, disclosure documents in finance. The argument was that a trained model is a component with characteristics, and that shipping a component without stating its characteristics is a practice the rest of engineering abandoned decades ago. The original nine sections were model details, intended use, factors, metrics, evaluation data, training data, quantitative analyses, ethical considerations, and caveats and recommendations.
