# Progressive Delivery: Using Observability to Decide When to Move Forward

 Progressive migration is not just about splitting a deployment into multiple steps.

It is a risk-management strategy.

Before moving to the next wave, the team should answer:

  1. What is the smallest group that represents the real production scenario?
  2. Which signals indicate that the change is healthy?
  3. What threshold should stop the rollout?
  4. Has rollback been tested or only documented?
  5. Who is responsible for the decision to continue, pause, or revert?

A safe migration turns every wave into a learning opportunity.

The operating model can be simple:

  • start with a small and representative group;
  • observe errors, latency, saturation, and user impact;
  • compare the results with a baseline;
  • record decisions and evidence;
  • expand only when the agreed criteria are met;
  • keep rollback available and understood.

Observability is not only about proving that something happened. Its real value is helping engineers decide what to do next.

For Platform Engineering and SRE teams, a successful change is not necessarily a change with zero incidents. It is a change where risk was limited, signals were defined, and the team knew when to move forward or go back.

What criteria does your team use to decide that a rollout is ready for the next wave?
