I built a free Tandem alternative with an AI dragon. Hit #1 on BootstrapArena, but 0 active users. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Devs! 👋

A month ago, I got completely fed up with the spam and paywalls on language exchange apps like Tandem and HelloTalk. So I built my own: LangX (langx.space).

It's a 100% free, text-based platform for practicing English. No voice calls (perfect for shy people), no ads, no paywalls. It runs on Node.js with a Supabase (PostgreSQL) backend. To keep it free, I built a pool of free AI APIs (Groq, OpenRouter) with a fallback to regex scripts if the AI fails.

The main feature is Clip — an AI dragon who corrects your grammar and roasts you for mistakes. If you type "I very like this app", he will mock you and tell you to use "I really like".

The good news: I recently launched on BootstrapArena and took #1 Product of the Month.

The bad news: I have almost 0 active users. People visit the site, look around, but nobody actually stays to chat with the dragon or register.

I'm a solo dev with a $0 marketing budget. The "cold start" problem for community-driven apps is brutal. I tried Reddit (got banned), Indie Hackers (can't post yet), and TikTok (low conversion).

I need your brutal feedback. I added a guest mode — you don't even need to register to test Clip.

Please go to langx.space, type a sentence with a mistake (e.g., "I go to school yesterday"), and tell me:

  1. Does the AI response feel natural? (Or does it feel like a scripted bot?)
  2. Is the terminal UI/UX confusing on desktop vs. mobile?
  3. What would make you stay and create an account?

Any technical advice on architecture, prompts, or growth hacking is highly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Ranking #1 with zero active users usually means the launch crowd was other makers, not language learners. For an exchange app, start with one language pair and a fixed weekly time slot, so the first ten people actually find a partner online when they open it.

You hit a nerve with this. I actually already have a "daily 19:00 MSK speaking hour" on the site. But you are 100% right — it doesn't work. People log in at 19:00, see an empty room (just the AI dragon waiting), and leave. Nobody wants to be the first to speak.

So the problem isn't the time slot, it's the "empty room" paradox.

How would you fix it? Should I fake activity (have the AI start a specific debate topic at 19:00 sharp)? Or restrict it to one language pair (e.g., RU-EN) and spam it everywhere?

(I just updated the landing page with a big "Try the dragon" button, but for human-to-human chat, this onboarding is killing me).
