Gartner forecasts worldwide AI spending of $2.596 trillion in 2026, up 47% from $1.765 trillion in 2025. That number gets quoted a lot — and it gets misquoted even more.
The $2.596 trillion is not AI SaaS revenue. It covers the whole AI economy, and infrastructure is the biggest piece of it.
What the $2.6T actually contains
- AI infrastructure: $1.432T forecast for 2026
- AI services: $585.5B
- AI software: $453.2B
- AI models: $32.6B
The closest category to AI SaaS is AI software at $453.2 billion — and even that includes software beyond subscription applications. Quoting $2.6T as "the AI SaaS market" double-counts the same economic activity across layers.
Adoption is broad. Scaling is not.
McKinsey's 2025 State of AI survey (1,993 responses, 105 countries) found nearly nine in ten organizations regularly used AI — but nearly two-thirds had not begun scaling AI across the enterprise. 62% were at least experimenting with AI agents, yet only 39% reported enterprise-level EBIT impact.
Eurostat measured something different, and lower: 20.0% of EU enterprises with at least 10 employees used AI technologies in 2025, up from 13.5% in 2024. Large-enterprise adoption was 55.03%. The most common use was analysis of written language, at 11.8%.
These numbers are not contradictory. They measure different populations with different definitions. Do not average them together.
What to check before you buy AI SaaS
Feature availability is not active use. A vendor may enable an assistant for every account while only a subset of users invoke it repeatedly. Before scaling, document the task, baseline current performance, run a controlled pilot, and track human review and failure rates.
And check governance: data retention, model-training policies, access controls, audit logs, human escalation, and geographic processing — especially when AI features operate across customer records, financial information, or source code.
