E-commerce Statistics 2026: $340B in a Quarter, and 17.1% of All U.S. Retail
The cleanest 2026 e-commerce story is not a speculative global forecast. The best supported numbers come from the U.S. Census Bureau, Adobe Analytics, and company investor reporting.
U.S. online sales: $340.2B in Q2 2026
In its report released August 18, 2026, the Census Bureau estimated U.S. retail e-commerce sales at USD 340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, seasonally adjusted. That was up 3.8% from Q1 2026 and 12.2% from Q2 2025. E-commerce accounted for 17.1% of total U.S. retail sales in the quarter (total retail: USD 1,986.5 billion).
The share is large enough to make online operations a core retail channel — but most U.S. retail sales still happen outside the e-commerce line item. Online sales keep taking share, but the pace is steady rather than explosive.
Holiday 2025: $257.8B, and mobile did most of it
Adobe reported U.S. consumers spent USD 257.8 billion online during the 2025 holiday season (November 1 – December 31), up 6.8% year over year, with 25 days above USD 4 billion in online spend. Cyber Week generated USD 44.2 billion, Cyber Monday reached USD 14.25 billion, and Black Friday reached USD 11.8 billion.
Smartphones drove 56.4% of online transactions during that holiday period (up from 54.5% in 2024). On Christmas Day, smartphones drove 66.5% of online sales. A 2026 e-commerce strategy that treats mobile checkout as secondary is behind actual consumer behavior.
Platform scale: Shopify's $115.6B quarter
Shopify reported USD 115.567 billion in GMV for Q2 2026, up from USD 87.837 billion in Q2 2025, with quarterly revenue of USD 3.583 billion, up 34% year over year. That is platform GMV, not the entire e-commerce market — but it shows how much merchant activity now runs through commerce software, payments, and storefront tools.
