Several prep sites now list “HR Journeys” as its own CIS-HR exam domain, with weights anywhere from 15% to 30%. ServiceNow’s official blueprint says otherwise. Here is what it actually contains, and where Journeys fit in.
The short answer
The official Certified Implementation Specialist – Human Resources (CIS-HR) Mainline Exam Blueprint, marked “Updated July 2026”, lists three exam domains. There is no separate HR Journeys domain.
| Exam domain | What it covers (from the blueprint) | Percent of exam |
|---|---|---|
| Describe and use the ServiceNow HR System Architecture | Plugins; HR table structure; application scoping | 30% |
| Configure and Implement ServiceNow Core HR Applications and Employee Center | Users, groups, skills and roles; assignment rules; HR services, HR catalog items and record producers; Employee Center branding | 40% |
| Describe and Use Platform, Role, and Contextual Security | How platform, role and contextual security are used; how the Delegated Developer role works; configuring security options to protect HR data | 30% |
So are HR Journeys on the exam?
Yes, but not as a domain of their own. The blueprint’s exam purpose says the certification validates your ability to manage HR architecture, configure core applications and Employee Center, implement HR Journeys, and apply security to protect HR data. Its recommended experience lists the HR applications you should know, including HR Case Management, Lifecycle Events and Journey Designer.
In other words, expect journey and lifecycle-event questions, but they count towards the three domains above, not a fourth one. In our own CIS-HR practice tests we file them under Core HR Applications and Employee Center, the domain that covers configuring the HR applications.
What ServiceNow recommends before you sit it
The blueprint recommends this experience:
- Three to six months of field experience participating in ServiceNow deployment projects or maintaining ServiceNow instances
- Participation in at least one ServiceNow HR deployment project
- Practical knowledge of Human Resources processes; some knowledge of IT Service Request workflows also helps
- For each HR application (HR Case Management, Lifecycle Events, Journey Designer, HR Integrations, HR Administration, HR Dashboards and Reports): its baseline functionality, features, tables and roles; the basic and advanced operations performed by HR users and the system; and its system architecture and security
How to use the weights when you study
- Spend the most time on Core HR Applications and Employee Center. At 40%, it is the largest share of the exam.
- Do not skip security. Platform, role and contextual security is worth as much as architecture, 30% each.
- Check the date on any study material. If a source shows four domains or different percentages, it is not following the July 2026 blueprint.
