Stripe payment links + AI outreach: the $0 stack

Stripe Payment Links + AI Outreach: The $0 Stack

Okay, let's be real. Starting a side hustle, validating an idea, or even just trying to get paid for a skill can feel… daunting. Especially when budget is the first thing that disappears. I recently tackled this exact problem – wanting to offer a micro-consulting service without the upfront cost of website hosting, complex payment integrations, or a dedicated sales team. The solution? A surprisingly powerful combination of Stripe Payment Links and AI-powered outreach. And the best part? It costs practically $0 to get started.

This isn't about getting rich quick. It's about minimizing friction and maximizing your chance of actually getting paid for your work. Let me walk you through how I built this “$0 stack” and some code examples to get you started.

The Problem: Friction is the Enemy of Income

I wanted to offer personalized feedback on AI prompt engineering. It's a skill I've been refining, and I figured I could provide value to people struggling to get the most out of tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney. But the traditional route – building a website, integrating a complex payment gateway, setting up email marketing – felt like weeks of work before even making a single dollar.

The biggest hurdles were:

  • Payment Processing: Traditional gateways require setup, merchant accounts, and monthly fees.
  • Sales/Outreach: Finding potential customers and convincing them to part with their money is time-consuming.
  • Landing Page/Presentation: You need something to direct people to, explaining your offering.

The Solution: Stripe Payment Links + AI Outreach

This is where Stripe Payment Links comes in. They’re game-changingly simple. Essentially, they're pre-built, customizable payment pages you can share via a link. No website required. And for outreach, I leaned heavily into AI tools to automate the process.

Here's the breakdown:

  1. Stripe Payment Link Creation: Define your service, price, and description.
  2. AI-Powered Outreach: Use AI to identify potential customers and craft personalized messages with your Stripe Payment Link.
  3. Automation (Optional): Automate the outreach process for scalability.

Diving into the Code: Stripe Payment Link Creation (Python)

You'll need a Stripe API key. Get one from your Stripe dashboard (you'll need a Stripe account, but you only pay when you actually process a payment). I used Python and the Stripe library.

import stripe

stripe.api_key = "YOUR_STRIPE_SECRET_KEY"  # Replace with your actual key

def create_payment_link(amount_in_cents, description):
  """Creates a Stripe Payment Link."""
  try:
    payment_link = stripe.PaymentLink.create(
      amount = amount_in_cents,
      currency = "usd",
      description = description,
      after_completion={
        'redirect': {
          'url': 'https://example.com/thank-you' # Replace with your thank you page!
        }
      }
    )
    return payment_link.url
  except stripe.error.StripeError as e:
    print(f"Error creating Payment Link: {e}")
    return None

if __name__ == "__main__":
  amount = 2999  # $29.99 in cents
  description = "Personalized AI Prompt Engineering Feedback - 30 minute consultation."
  payment_link_url = create_payment_link(amount, description)

  if payment_link_url:
    print(f"Payment Link URL: {payment_link_url}")
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Key Points:

  • amount_in_cents: Stripe uses the smallest currency unit (cents for USD).
  • currency: Specify the currency.
  • description: Clearly describe the service. This is what the customer sees.
  • after_completion: Redirects the user to a thank you page after successful payment. Crucial! Set this up to confirm the service has been purchased.

AI Outreach: Finding Your Audience & Crafting Messages

This is where things get really interesting. I used a combination of tools and techniques:

  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator (Free Trial): The free trial is surprisingly useful for identifying potential customers based on job titles, skills (e.g., “Prompt Engineer”, “AI Researcher”), and groups they belong to. Focus on people actively discussing AI tools.
  • ChatGPT (or similar LLM): This is your message crafting powerhouse. Don't just blast generic messages! Here's a prompt I used:
"You are a friendly and helpful expert in AI prompt engineering. A LinkedIn user, [User Name], works as a [User Job Title] at [User Company]. They recently posted about struggling with [Specific Problem]. Write a short, personalized LinkedIn message (around 100 words) offering to help them improve their prompts, mentioning my 30-minute personalized feedback service. Include a link to my Stripe Payment Link: [Your Stripe Payment Link URL]. Focus on the value I can provide – improving their results with AI."
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Replace:

  • [User Name] with the LinkedIn user’s name.
  • [User Job Title] with their job title.
  • [User Company] with their company.
  • [Specific Problem] with the specific challenge they mentioned.
  • [Your Stripe Payment Link URL] with the link generated from the Python script.

  • Hunter.io (Free Tier): Useful for finding email addresses associated with LinkedIn profiles. Use with caution and respect privacy!

  • Lemlist (Free Tier): Email automation tool for personalization (although you'll need to be mindful of their free tier limitations).

Automation (The Next Level)

Once you've dialed in your messaging and found a consistent flow of leads, you can automate parts of the process. I used:

  • Make.com (formerly Integromat): A no-code automation platform. I connected LinkedIn Sales Navigator (using a webhook) to trigger an email sequence via Lemlist whenever someone matched my target criteria.
  • Zapier: Another excellent no-code automation tool, similar to Make.com.

The Results (and the Limitations)

This "$0 stack" has been surprisingly effective. I’ve consistently generated enough revenue to cover the (eventual) costs of upgrading my AI tools and building a more professional setup.

Here's what worked:

  • Low Barrier to Entry: The minimal upfront cost made it easy to just start.
  • Personalization: The AI-powered messaging significantly increased response rates compared to generic outreach.
  • Stripe's Simplicity: Payment Links removed
