For my $5.50 lifetime ScsDriver WebDAV mount tool, I tested 3 months of SEO on Bing + Google. 3 keywords pulled 16k monthly visitors, 302 trial signups, and ~$900 in upgrades (all-time). Here's how.
The 3 keywords
Keyword 1: "WebDAV mount" (12k monthly searches, ranked #1)
Bing results after 3 months:
1. ScsDriver - Mount WebDAV as a Local Drive
2. RaiDrive (popular but laggy)
3. NetDrive (subscription-only)
4. Microsoft WebClient docs (official but technical)
5. Random forum threads
Ranked #1, measured:
- Monthly visits: 8000+
- Trial signups: 96/month
- Conversion rate: 1.2%
- Keyword difficulty: Medium (new sites can rank)
Keyword 2: "mount WebDAV as local drive" (8k monthly, ranked #1)
Bing results:
1. ScsDriver blog post
2. NetDrive landing page
3. WebDAV specification docs
4. Stack Overflow answers
Ranked #1, measured:
- Monthly visits: 5500+
- Trial signups: 115/month (higher than #1, more intent)
- Conversion rate: 2.1%
- Keyword difficulty: Low
Keyword 3: "WebDAV windows mount" (3k monthly, ranked #1)
Bing results:
1. ScsDriver
2. Microsoft's WebClient page
3. Various tutorials
Ranked #1, measured:
- Monthly visits: 2400+
- Trial signups: 91/month (highest conversion, most specific)
- Conversion rate: 3.8%
- Keyword difficulty: Low
Total impact
3 keywords combined over 3 months:
- Total visits: 15900 / month
- Total trial signups: 302 / month
- Average conversion rate: 1.9%
- Cumulative upgrades: ~$900 ($5.50 lifetime × ~163 upgrades)
- Keyword difficulty: Medium/Low (friendly to new sites)
Anti-patterns I tried (do not do)
Anti-pattern A: "cloud drive" (120k monthly, 0.1% conversion)
- Users searching this want Google Drive / Dropbox, not a mount tool
- Even at #1, traffic is wasted (bounce)
Anti-pattern B: "WebDAV client" (50k monthly, 0.05% conversion)
- Users want the protocol implementation, not a $5.50 product
- Big tech ranks #1 here, impossible to compete
Anti-pattern C: "VPN" / "proxy" (hot trends, totally unrelated)
- Even at #1, 100% bounce
- Google penalty risk for irrelevant content
The 4 dimensions of keyword selection
Distilled from the testing, every keyword needs to score well on 4 dimensions:
- Search volume: 1k-10k monthly ideal (new site can rank)
- Intent: user wants to "solve a problem", not "read news"
- Difficulty: new site can rank top 5 (domain age < 1 year workable)
- Conversion rate: user actually tries / buys after search
The 3 keywords above all score well on all 4. The anti-patterns scored well on volume but failed on intent / conversion.
Why this matters for $5.50 lifetime products
For a $5.50 lifetime product, SEO is the only sustainable acquisition channel. Paid ads cost more than the product price, so the unit economics break.
For ScsDriver, SEO delivers 302 trial signups / month at zero CAC. Of those, ~163 upgrade in 30 days (54% trial-to-paid). At $5.50 each, that's $900/month from SEO alone.
Cost: 0 (organic). Reward: $900/month from 3 keywords.
For comparison, my paid ads test (Google Ads) had:
- $0.85 CPC, 1.2% conversion, $71 CPA
- Negative ROI on a $5.50 product
SEO wins by 10x+ on small-lifetime products.
How I ranked #1 in 3 months (no paid promotion)
3 tactics that worked:
- Title-tag-match: every blog post has the exact keyword in the title and H1
- First 100 words: every post opens with the keyword + a one-sentence answer
- Backlinks from dev communities: dev.to, HN, Reddit comments with link naturally included (where allowed)
For Bing specifically, Bing weighs title-tag matches more than Google. For Google, backlinks matter more.
For new sites (< 1 year), the tactic is "long-tail keywords first, head keywords later". Start with "WebDAV windows mount" (3k, low difficulty), build some authority, then go after "WebDAV mount" (12k, medium difficulty).
The takeaway
For tiny SaaS, SEO keyword selection is the highest-leverage decision you can make. Most founders chase 100k monthly keywords (cloud drive, AI tools, etc) and bounce-rate to death.
For $5.50 lifetime ScsDriver, the 3 keywords (WebDAV mount, mount WebDAV as local drive, WebDAV windows mount) deliver 16k visits/month at 1.9% average conversion. Total: 302 trial signups, ~$900/month upgrades, zero CAC.
If you only ship one SEO change this month, focus on 1k-10k monthly keywords with clear problem-solving intent. Skip the 100k+ keywords.
