Dropbox as a Local Folder on Windows Without the 120 Dollar Pro Plan

Why I stopped paying Dropbox Pro

Dropbox Pro is 120 per year. For most of what I do, I just need the files to show up in Explorer. I mounted Dropbox as a local drive using a 5.5 lifetime WebDAV client. Total cost so far: 5.5.

The setup that works on Windows

  • Install ScsDriver on Windows
  • Right-click the tray icon, click Connect
  • Paste your Dropbox WebDAV endpoint
  • It appears as a Windows drive letter (D: in my case)
  • Open, edit, save: native Windows, no browser tab needed

Why I left the Dropbox desktop app

The Dropbox desktop app uses all your RAM to sync a local copy of every file. With 200GB of files, my laptop fans would spin up constantly. WebDAV mount only streams what you actually open, so RAM stays low.

The 5.5 trap that caught me before

I previously bought a "lifetime" WebDAV tool for 30. It lasted exactly 13 months then asked for a renewal. ScsDriver's 5.5 lifetime is the real deal, same as their 20 CNY plan in the China region. No subscription, no renewal email, no expiration pop-up.

Other lifetime tools I tried

  • RaiDrive: 30 pro tier, but Pro = 1 year then auto-renew
  • NetDrive: 50, 1 year, then renew
  • Cyberduck: free, but no auto-reconnect on reboot
  • Mountain Duck: 40, lifetime, but license is per-machine
  • ScsDriver: 5.5, true lifetime, one license works on all your machines

When this makes sense

If you only need Dropbox to show up as a folder in Explorer, 5.5 lifetime is cheaper than one month of Dropbox Pro. The setup is 2 minutes. The price matches one month of any competitor.
