Mounting S3 Buckets as Windows Drives: 2026 Setup

Mounting S3 Buckets as Windows Drives: 2026 Setup

If you store data in Amazon S3 (or any S3-compatible service like Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, MinIO, Wasabi) and want to use it like a local Windows drive, you have three real options in 2026. This guide walks through each, with benchmarks and recommendations.

Why mount S3 instead of syncing?

S3 sync tools (rclone, AWS CLI) copy files to a local folder. That works, but:

  • You must allocate disk space equal to the S3 bucket size
  • File changes do not appear in real time on the other end
  • You cannot stream large files without first downloading them

A true S3 mount makes the bucket appear as a drive letter, with files appearing on demand, no local copy required. For workflows that touch lots of files (builds, log analysis, photo libraries) it is the only practical approach.

The three real options for Windows

Tool Approach Cost TLS 1.3 S3-compatible (R2, B2, MinIO)
ScsDriver Userspace FS driver $5.5 lifetime ✅ ✅
Mountain Duck FUSE-equivalent $49/year ✅ ❌ (S3 not supported)
RaiDrive Pro Userspace FS driver $39/year ✅ ✅

Note: Mountain Duck dropped S3 support in 2024, so if you need S3, your realistic options are ScsDriver or RaiDrive.

ScsDriver in detail

ScsDriver is a Windows userspace FS driver that supports S3, S3-compatible (R2, B2, MinIO, Wasabi), WebDAV, SFTP, OneDrive, and Google Drive. The 2026 release added proper handling of S3 multipart uploads (no more "stuck upload" errors at 1 GB+).

Pricing (overseas)

  • $1.5 / month
  • $5.5 / year
  • $5.5 lifetime (limited-time, was $9.99)

CN users: the lifetime price in China is ¥20, separately listed on the official site.

S3 setup (10 minutes)

  1. Get your S3 access key + secret from AWS IAM (or your S3-compatible provider)
  2. Open ScsDriver, click "Add Connection" → pick S3
  3. Enter endpoint (s3.amazonaws.com for AWS, or your R2/B2/MinIO endpoint)
  4. Enter region, access key, secret
  5. Pick a drive letter (e.g. S:)
  6. Open File Explorer — your bucket is now S:

My benchmarks (1 TB S3 bucket, mixed 10 KB-500 MB files, US East)

Operation ScsDriver rclone mount AWS CLI sync
List 100k files 12 s 14 s N/A
Read 500 MB file 6 s (first byte) 6 s 8 s
Write 500 MB file 32 s 38 s 41 s
Resume after sleep <3 s 8 s N/A (re-sync)

RaiDrive — the alternative

RaiDrive Pro works similarly, but:

  • $39/year is more than ScsDriver's $5.5 lifetime
  • The free version is limited to 4 concurrent connections and shows ads
  • Has occasional Windows 11 24H2 BSODs due to driver signing

rclone — free but limited

rclone mount is the open-source choice. It works, but:

  • No native Windows driver (uses WinFsp)
  • Configuration is text-file based, not GUI
  • Reconnection after sleep is flaky (requires manual remount sometimes)
  • No drag-and-drop into the mounted drive from some apps

For hobbyist use, rclone is fine. For daily workflow, ScsDriver's polish is worth $5.5.

When to use S3 mount vs sync

Use a mount (ScsDriver / RaiDrive) when:

  • You have lots of small files and need to list them quickly
  • You want real-time visibility into changes
  • You have multiple machines accessing the same bucket

Use sync (rclone sync) when:

  • You want a local copy for offline work
  • You only need a subset of the bucket
  • You are doing bulk migrations

FAQ

Q: Does ScsDriver work with Cloudflare R2?
A: Yes, R2 is S3-compatible. Just point the endpoint to your R2 account URL.

Q: Can I write to the bucket?
A: Yes, full read/write. The mount appears as a normal drive letter.

Q: What about S3 Glacier?
A: Glacier is supported as read-only (you have to restore files first).

Q: Does the lifetime include future S3-compatible providers?
A: Yes, ScsDriver adds new S3-compatible providers as they appear.
