Installation

SearXNG is easy to self-host:

SearXNG uses date-based versioning (e.g., 2026.2.19). The latest tag is acceptable here since SearXNG releases frequently and maintains backwards compatibility. Configure which search engines to aggregate via settings.yml.

Google requires no installation. Open a browser.

Search Quality

Google wins on raw search quality. Period. Google's ranking algorithms, knowledge graph, and decades of training data produce the most relevant results for most queries. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, and AI Overviews provide direct answers.

SearXNG aggregates results from multiple engines and re-ranks them. In practice, search quality is very good — often nearly identical to Google for straightforward queries. SearXNG excels when you want unbiased results without personalization or SEO spam filtering that might hide relevant results.
