SearXNG vs Google: Privacy Search Compared

Quick Verdict

Google delivers better search results — that's not debatable. SearXNG gives you privacy, no ads, no tracking, and results aggregated from multiple search engines (including Google). If you're self-hosting SearXNG, you get the best of both worlds: Google-quality results without Google knowing what you search for.

Updated March 2026: Verified with latest Docker images and configurations.

Overview

This isn't a fair fight on search quality — Google has decades of data and the most advanced ranking algorithms on Earth. But SearXNG isn't trying to beat Google at search. It's trying to use Google (and Bing, DuckDuckGo, Brave, and 70+ other engines) while protecting your privacy.

Google — The default search engine for most people. Tracks every query, builds an advertising profile, personalizes results, and shows ads above organic results. Free to use (you pay with your data).

SearXNG — AGPL-3.0 license. Self-hosted metasearch engine that aggregates results from 70+ search engines. No tracking, no ads, no user profiles. You see the same results as everyone else — no filter bubble.

SearXNG uses date-based versioning (e.g., 2026.2.19). The latest tag is acceptable here since SearXNG releases frequently and maintains backwards compatibility. Configure which search engines to aggregate via settings.yml.

Google requires no installation. Open a browser.

Search Quality

Google wins on raw search quality. Period. Google's ranking algorithms, knowledge graph, and decades of training data produce the most relevant results for most queries. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, and AI Overviews provide direct answers.

SearXNG aggregates results from multiple engines and re-ranks them. In practice, search quality is very good — often nearly identical to Google for straightforward queries. SearXNG excels when you want unbiased results without personalization or SEO spam filtering that might hide relevant results.

Where SearXNG falls short:

  • No knowledge panels or direct answers
  • No AI-generated summaries
  • Image and video search quality depends on source engines
  • No integration with Google Maps, Shopping, etc.

Where SearXNG shines:

  • Results from multiple engines surface pages Google might demote
  • No filter bubble means consistent results regardless of search history
  • Technical queries often produce better results (less SEO noise)
  • No ads cluttering the first page

Privacy

This is why SearXNG exists. The privacy comparison isn't even close.

Google collects:

  • Every search query
  • Click behavior (which results you click)
  • Location data
  • Device information
  • Cross-site tracking via Google services
  • Builds advertising profile across all Google products

SearXNG collects nothing:

  • No cookies
  • No user tracking
  • No query logging (when properly configured)
  • No IP logging
  • Requests to external search engines come from your server, not your browser
  • No advertising profile built

When you self-host SearXNG, your search queries go from your browser to your server, then from your server to various search engines. The search engines see your server's IP, not yours. They can't correlate queries to a specific person.

Use Cases

Choose SearXNG If...

  • Privacy is important to you
  • You want ad-free search results
  • You want unbiased, non-personalized results
  • You're already self-hosting other services
  • You want to aggregate results from multiple search engines
  • You want to set it as your default browser search engine
  • You want API access to search without paying for Google's API

Stay With Google If...

  • Search quality is your only priority
  • You rely on Google Maps, Shopping, or AI Overviews
  • You need knowledge panels and direct answers
  • You don't want to maintain a server
  • You're comfortable with Google's data collection practices

Final Verdict

SearXNG doesn't replace Google — it wraps it. You can configure SearXNG to include Google as one of its source engines, getting Google-quality results without Google knowing it's you searching. Add Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Brave to the mix, and you get a broader result set than any single engine provides.

For self-hosters who value privacy, SearXNG is one of the easiest and most impactful services you can run. Set it as your default search engine in your browser and you'll rarely notice a quality difference while gaining complete search privacy.

Pair SearXNG with Whoogle if you want a Google-only interface — Whoogle proxies Google results specifically, while SearXNG aggregates from many engines.
