Most developers waste time arguing about which programming language is best. Real systems do not care. The best software is often built with more than one language because different parts of a system have different jobs. Some need fast iteration. Others need raw performance. Treating one language like the answer to everything is usually not engineering. It is just preference dressed up as principle.
One of the strangest habits in software is how often we talk about programming languages like they are religions.
Python developers defend Python. Rust developers defend Rust. JavaScript developers defend JavaScript with the energy of people trying to explain away a crime scene. Meanwhile real systems in production keep using multiple languages because real engineering does not care about language tribalism.
If you are building serious software, one language usually should not do everything.
That is not because using more languages is fashionable. It is because different parts of a system have different jobs. Some parts need to change quickly. Some parts need to run quickly. Some parts need to be easy to experiment with. Some parts need tight control over memory, concurrency or latency.
That is why mixing interpreted and compiled languages is often the right choice.
There are two kinds of speed
Most language debates focus on runtime speed. That matters obviously. Nobody enjoys a sluggish service unless they are being paid by the CPU hour.
But there is another kind of speed that matters just as much.
Development speed.
A lot of software wins because a team can build, test, change and ship ideas quickly. That is one reason scripting and dynamic languages have been so useful for years. They reduce friction and make iteration easier. That is why languages like Python and JavaScript keep showing up in important systems. They are not always the fastest at runtime, but they are often among the fastest ways to move a product forward.
Then you hit the other side of reality.
A service gets hot. A pipeline becomes CPU-heavy. A parser starts eating memory. A gateway needs better concurrency. A desktop app needs native performance. That is when compiled languages start earning their place.
Interpreted languages are great for fast-moving layers
If you are building AI orchestration, internal tools, analytics flows, admin services, product experiments, glue code or scripts, you usually want a language that gets out of the way.
That is where interpreted or high-level languages shine.
Python gives you a very strong ecosystem for AI, data, automation and rapid backend work. JavaScript and TypeScript give you a fast path for product-facing systems, frontend logic, serverless code and backend-for-frontend layers.
These languages help teams move.
That matters more than many engineers admit. A lot of projects do not fail because the code was not fast enough. They fail because the team took too long to learn, adapt and ship.
Compiled languages are great for heavy lifting
Compiled languages solve a different problem.
They are often a better fit when you need:
- high throughput services
- lower memory use
- better control over latency
- stronger concurrency
- native integration
- tighter control over hardware and system resources
This is where Rust, Go, C++, Java and C# often come in.
If a service is handling image processing, cryptography, file conversion, compression, streaming, event ingestion or something else where runtime efficiency matters, a compiled language may be the right tool.
That does not mean the whole system should be rewritten in that language. It means the part that needs those properties should be written in that language.
That is the distinction people miss.
Microservices make this easier
This becomes even more obvious once you look at microservices properly.
Martin Fowler describes microservices as small independently deployable services built around business capabilities. Microservices

Once your system is split into real service boundaries it becomes much easier to use different languages for different purposes.
A few examples:
- A Python service for AI orchestration, prompt pipelines, document classification or enrichment jobs
- A Go service for a high throughput event consumer or lightweight API gateway
- A Rust service for media processing, encryption, local inference helpers or performance-sensitive file work
- A TypeScript service for a backend-for-frontend layer that speaks directly to the web app
- A Java or C# service for billing, enterprise integration or long-lived business workflows
This is not random complexity. This is an architectural fit.

That is a much more mature way to think than asking which single language should own the whole system forever.
You do not always need a separate service
There is another pattern that matters here.
Sometimes the best answer is not a new microservice. Sometimes it is just a compiled core inside an interpreted system.
Python has supported native extensions for a long time. The official docs cover extending Python with C or C++. Extending Python with C or C++
If you prefer Rust, PyO3 gives you a clean way to write native Python modules in Rust or embed Python inside Rust applications.
Node has a similar escape hatch through Node-API, which lets you build ABI-stable native addons.
This pattern is extremely practical.
You keep Python or Node for the fast-moving outer layer. You move the expensive part into Rust, C++ or another compiled language. That gives you a better balance between developer speed and runtime speed without forcing a full rewrite.
In other words you do not have to choose between convenience and performance like some tragic medieval oath. You can combine them.
This is what good architecture actually looks like
The best systems are not βpure.β They are intentional.
A good architecture does not ask:
Which language is best?
It asks:
Which language is best for this layer, this service and this bottleneck?
That question leads to better decisions.
Use interpreted languages where change is frequent and iteration speed matters.
Use compiled languages where performance, safety or system-level control matters.
Use microservices when the boundary is real and the service has a reason to exist.
Use native extensions when only part of the system needs extra speed.
That is how you avoid two common mistakes at once:
- forcing one language into every problem
- creating a messy polyglot stack with no discipline
The catch
This approach is powerful but it is not free.
More languages mean more tooling, more build pipelines, more hiring complexity, more observability work and more knowledge that the team needs to carry. So no, I am not arguing that every team should add Rust, Go, Python, TypeScript, Java and a sacrificial goat to the same repo.
I am saying this:
Use more than one language when the payoff is clear and the boundary is clean.
That is the whole game.
If you cannot explain in one sentence why a service is written in a certain language, it probably should not be.

The best software is not built by worshipping one language.
It is built by understanding that software systems are made of different layers with different needs.
Some layers need flexibility. Some need throughput. Some need easy experimentation. Some need tight resource control.
That is why mixing interpreted and compiled languages is not a compromise. It is often just good engineering.
And once microservices enter the picture, the case gets stronger. A service that handles AI workflows does not need the same language as a service that handles high-volume event processing. A file conversion engine does not need the same runtime as a dashboard backend. A product is not one problem. It is a collection of problems.
The teams that design around that reality usually build faster and scale better.
