Rest Is Part of the Work, Not the Reward

You treat rest
like dessert.

Something you earn
only after
the plate is clean,

and the plate
is never clean.

So you never rest,

and you wear it
like a medal
that is slowly
killing you.

Here is the thing
nobody billed you for.

Rest is not
the reward
for the work.

Rest is part
of the work.

The insight you chased
all afternoon
arrives
in the shower.

The bug you couldn't see
at 11 p.m.
is obvious
at 9 the next morning,

because sleep
did the debugging
you couldn't.

The mind
solves in the pause
what it cannot
solve at the desk.

You are not being lazy
when you step away.

You are running
a background process
you don't get to watch.

The walk
is working.

The nap
is compiling.

The staring
out the window
is the part of the job
that looks
like nothing
and does
the most.

A tired mind
is not a cheaper worker.

It is an expensive one
that makes mistakes
you will pay
to fix
later,

with interest,

at the worst
possible time.

So stop
grinding a dull blade
harder.

Stop.

Sharpen it.

The rest
you keep deferring
is not the thing
slowing you down.

It is the thing
that would speed you up
if you would
only allow it.

Close the laptop
before you hate it.

Come back
sharp.

The work
you do rested

is worth
three hours
of the work
you do
wrecked.

Rest is not
the absence
of work.

It is the part
that makes
the rest
of it
good.
