Duck AI vs ChatGPT comes down to a single trade you have to make up front: anonymity or capability. Duck AI (DuckDuckGo's duck.ai) gives you six models with no account, no server-side chat history and stripped metadata; ChatGPT gives you a stronger default model, unlimited free text chats and a far deeper feature set in exchange for an account and a data relationship.
Verdict: Duck AI wins free, private, multi-model chat. It needs no sign-up, removes your IP address before prompts reach providers, and keeps chat history on your own device. ChatGPT wins raw capability and features, and since 6 August 2026 it has offered unlimited free text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna (OpenAI). If your priority is not being profiled, use Duck AI. If your priority is getting hard work done with files, images, voice and research tools, use ChatGPT.
TL;DR
- Duck AI: free, no account, six models, anonymised prompts, local-only history (DuckDuckGo).
- ChatGPT free: GPT-5.6 Luna default with unlimited text chats since 6 August 2026; files, images, voice and tools still capped (OpenAI).
- Duck AI's daily cap is the main free-tier friction: resets at midnight UTC (DuckDuckGo).
- Paid tiers: DuckDuckGo Plus $9.99/mo, Pro $19.99/mo; ChatGPT Go $8/mo, Plus $20/mo, Pro from $100/mo.
- Frontier models stay paid on both sides: GPT-6 Astra is not on ChatGPT free, and Claude Opus 4.8 requires DuckDuckGo Pro.

What is Duck AI and how private is it really?
Duck AI is DuckDuckGo's chat interface at duck.ai. DuckDuckGo sits between you and the model provider as a proxy, and strips personal metadata including your IP address before the prompt is forwarded, so requests arrive looking like they came from DuckDuckGo rather than from you (DuckDuckGo privacy documentation).
Every provider on the platform agrees to Zero Data Retention: prompts and responses are deleted immediately after the reply is generated, chats are not used for training, and nothing is shared onward. There is one documented exception worth knowing about, because it is the kind of detail vendors usually bury: OpenAI and Anthropic use prompt caching, which holds a chat in short-term memory for up to an hour. DuckDuckGo states this is never written to disk.
Two of the models go further. gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B are hosted by Tinfoil.sh and labelled "zero provider visibility", meaning even the model provider never sees your prompt. For a question you would not type into a logged-in account, that is the pairing to use.
Your recent chats do exist somewhere: locally, on your own device. They are not on DuckDuckGo's servers, and the Fire Button clears them. As of August 2026 there is also optional chat sharing, where a recipient continues the shared conversation as their own separate chat.
What do you actually get free on each side?
Duck AI's free tier gives you six models to switch between (model list):
| Model | Provider |
|---|---|
| Claude 4.5 Haiku | Anthropic |
| Mistral Small 4 | Mistral |
| GPT-5.4 nano | OpenAI |
| GPT-5.4 mini | OpenAI |
| gpt-oss-120b | Tinfoil.sh (zero provider visibility) |
| Gemma 4 31B | Tinfoil.sh (zero provider visibility) |
You also get image creation through the "New Image" option, plus voice chat and dictation over an encrypted relay with transcripts saved locally (image creation docs). Each of these carries its own daily allowance.
ChatGPT's free tier changed shape on 6 August 2026. OpenAI made GPT-5.6 Luna the default for Free and Go users and removed text-chat limits entirely, subject to abuse guardrails, and added a Think button for harder questions. The caps did not disappear; they moved. Files, images, voice and other tools are still metered, and GPT-5.6 Sol sits behind Plus. We covered the mechanics of that shift in our GPT-5.6 free ChatGPT guide.
Duck AI's models are the small and mid-size ones (nano, mini, Haiku, a 31B Gemma), while ChatGPT free now hands you a current flagship-tier default with no text cap. On pure reasoning quality for a hard question, ChatGPT free is ahead. On breadth of model choice and on not being tracked, Duck AI is ahead.
Duck AI vs ChatGPT: which limits will you hit first?
On Duck AI, the ceiling is volume. The free tier has a daily usage limit, and DuckDuckGo documents the schedule plainly: daily limits reset at midnight UTC and weekly limits reset Sunday at midnight UTC. Subscribers get higher allowances, and Pro receives twice the Plus limit.
On ChatGPT free, the ceiling is capability. Text is unlimited, but the moment your task involves uploading a spreadsheet, generating a batch of images, running deep research or using Codex, you are into metered or paid territory. GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's newest frontier model, is paid-tier only; we benchmarked that class of model in our OS 2.0 agent benchmark.
There is a third cost on the ChatGPT side that is easy to overlook. OpenAI began showing ads to US free users in February 2026 and has been extending them to Free and Go users in European markets since. An ad-supported free tier is a different product from an anonymised one, even when both are priced at zero. We tracked the commercial side of that in our piece on ChatGPT's ads run rate and India ads manager. ChatGPT has also crossed one billion weekly users, the scale that makes an ad product viable.
What do the paid tiers change?
DuckDuckGo's subscription is a privacy bundle rather than an AI upgrade (pricing):
- Plus — $9.99/month or $99.99/year. Adds a VPN, advanced models (full GPT-5.4 and Claude Sonnet 4.6), Personal Information Removal (US only) and Identity Theft Restoration.
- Pro — $19.99/month or $199.99/year. Adds Claude Opus 4.8, higher reasoning effort and double the Plus usage limits (plan differences).
OpenAI's ladder is Go at $8/month, Plus at $20/month and Pro from $100/month, with Plus bringing GPT-5.6 Sol, deep research and Codex (Magica's analysis of the August changes).
At $9.99 DuckDuckGo is selling you a VPN, data removal and identity restoration with better models attached. At $20 OpenAI is selling you the strongest general-purpose assistant it ships. They are not really competing for the same wallet. If you are deciding where a single $20 subscription should go, our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers that decision directly.
Why this comparison, and who should pick which?
We priced 656 keywords in the AI and developer-tooling space using DataForSEO volume and difficulty data, and only 72 (11.0%) cleared a winnable bar of 150-6,000 monthly searches, difficulty 20 or below, a genuine technical term, and at least three words (n=656, measured 2026-09-21). Free and private AI chat was one of the clusters that cleared it, and duck ai is the highest-volume head term inside it — which tells you how many people are looking for exactly this trade-off.
Pick Duck AI if you want to ask a question without creating an account, if you are querying something sensitive, or you want to compare answers across Anthropic, Mistral and OpenAI models in one window. It works the same from India, the UK or anywhere else, because there is nothing to sign up for.
Pick ChatGPT if the work is the point: long documents, code, image generation at volume, voice, research workflows. Unlimited free text on GPT-5.6 Luna makes the free tier genuinely usable for daily work in a way it was not before August 2026.
The third option many readers land on is neither: run a model yourself. That removes the provider from the equation entirely, at the cost of hardware and setup time. Our guides on Ollama vs LM Studio and the Qwythos 9B local agent cover what that actually takes.
Used together they cover each other's gaps: Duck AI for what you would rather not log, ChatGPT for what needs the full toolkit.
