Introduction
When people think about redesigning a website, they often focus on changing layouts, typography, or adding new features. However, one of the simplest changes can have the biggest visual impact: the color palette.
To demonstrate this, I experimented with the Examin – LMS, Courses & Education HTML Template by applying several different color palettes while keeping everything else exactly the same. The layout, content, spacing, and components remain unchanged—the only difference is the colors.
Why Color Matters
A well-chosen color palette can influence how users perceive a website. It can make a design feel more modern, trustworthy, energetic, or minimal without changing its structure.
For educational websites, colors also affect readability and user experience. A balanced palette helps users focus on course content, navigation, and calls to action.
What Changes?
In the demonstration, only the colors are updated:
- Primary and secondary colors
- Buttons and links
- Background sections
- Cards and UI components
- Accent colors
The result shows how dramatically the appearance of a website can change with different color combinations.
Watch the Demonstration
The following video shows the same education website using multiple color palettes so you can compare how each one changes the overall look and feel.
Things to Consider When Choosing a Website Color Palette
- Keep sufficient contrast for readability.
- Use one dominant primary color.
- Limit the number of accent colors.
- Maintain consistency across components.
- Test colors in both light and dark sections.
- Consider accessibility guidelines for text and interactive elements.
Which Palette Works Best?
There isn't a single "best" color palette. The ideal choice depends on your audience, branding, and the message you want to communicate.
Which version do you prefer? I'd be interested to hear which palette feels most suitable for an education platform and why.
Note
The color palette variations shown in this demonstration were created using Sez, a tool for experimenting with and previewing different color palettes on HTML website templates. If you're interested in trying different color combinations on your own projects, you can explore it here:
