How I Got 129 Pages Indexed With Zero Budget
Two weeks ago my site had 0 pages on Google. Today: 129 URLs in the sitemap, 8 directory backlinks, 23 articles. Here's the exact playbook.
1. Sitemap First, Everything Else Later
Before writing a single article, I generated a complete sitemap.xml with all 129 URLs and submitted it to Google Search Console. This is step zero — Google can't rank what it can't find.
2. One Landing Page Per Search Intent
Instead of hoping my tool pages rank, I built dedicated SEO landing pages:
- merge-pdf-online-free.html → targets "merge pdf online free"
- pdf-to-word-online-free.html → targets "pdf to word free"
- 10 pages total, each with FAQ schema
Each page: 300+ words, FAQ JSON-LD, canonical URL, og tags. Total time per page: 20 minutes with a template.
3. IndexNow for Instant Bing Indexing
Google ignores IndexNow, but Bing doesn't. Every deploy pings IndexNow with new URLs. Bing traffic is real traffic — don't ignore it.
4. Content That Ranks on Its Own
23 dev.to articles, each targeting a different angle:
- Architecture deep-dives (developers love these)
- Listicles (shareable)
- Privacy/security angles (emotional hook)
- Cost breakdowns (curiosity hook)
6 of them now rank on Google for the site name. They also drive referral traffic.
5. Directory Backlinks
8 free directories submitted. Each is a backlink + potential referral source. Total cost: $0.
The Honest Numbers
- 2 weeks in: 2 impressions, 0 clicks, position ~70
- That's the STARTING LINE, not a failure
- SEO is a 3-6 month game
What I'd Do Differently
Build the SEO pages BEFORE the tools. I built 47 tools then wondered why nobody came. Traffic is a feature — build it first.
