Series: Building PdfWord — a free, no-backend PDF tools site (Part 16)
Nobody searches for "PdfWord." Why would they — it didn't exist until I built it. People search for "merge pdf without account", "compress pdf for whatsapp", "pdf to word without signup." Those long, specific, slightly-desperate queries are where a free tools site lives or dies.
So I stopped trying to rank for "PDF tools" (good luck against Adobe) and built 16 landing pages, each targeting one exact search phrase. Here's the full playbook.
The keyword strategy
I picked phrases with three properties:
- High intent — the searcher wants to DO something right now
- "Without signup" energy — the searcher is annoyed at existing tools
- Winnable — big players don't bother optimizing for these
Examples: split-pdf-online-free, sign-pdf-online-free, compress-pdf-for-whatsapp, free-invoice-generator-pakistan. That last one is my favorite — it's geo-specific, has almost no competition, and Pakistan's freelancers genuinely need PKR invoices.
The page formula (640–770 words each)
Every page follows the same skeleton:
- Title + H1 = exact target phrase. No cuteness. Google matches intent literally.
- ~700 words answering the query: what the task is, why it's annoying elsewhere, how to do it here in 3 steps.
- One clear CTA linking to the actual tool. The page is useless without it.
- 4 FAQs with FAQ schema markup. This is the cheat code — FAQ-rich results take up enormous SERP space, and most competitors don't bother.
- Real content, zero fake stats. I didn't invent "10,000 happy users." Google's smarter than that, and so are readers.
The internal linking web
16 orphan pages rank poorly. 16 interlinked pages rank better. So:
- The homepage has a visible "Popular Searches" section linking all 16
- Every page has a "Related Free Resources" nav linking the other 15
- That's 240 internal links forming a tight topical cluster around "free PDF tasks"
Internal links are the most underrated SEO lever for small sites. They're free, instant, and entirely in your control.
Sitemap + IndexNow
103 URLs in the sitemap, submitted to Search Console. Every deploy also pings IndexNow so Bing picks up new pages within hours instead of weeks. (Google ignores IndexNow, but Bing traffic is real traffic.)
Honest numbers
Two weeks in: 2 impressions, 0 clicks, average position ~70. That's not a success story — it's the starting line. SEO is a 3–6 month game and anyone telling you otherwise is selling a course.
But the foundation is right: real pages, real answers, real internal links, zero tricks. I'll report back at 30, 60, 90 days with whatever the numbers actually are — good or bad.
The takeaway
If you're building a free tools site: don't build 36 tools and hope. Build the tools, then build the roads that lead to them — one honest landing page per search intent, all linked together.
