How to Create a QR Code for a Business Card — Free, Custom Style, No Signup

A business card with a QR code does something a plain card can't — it turns a physical handshake into a digital action. The person scans it and lands exactly where you want them: your portfolio, your LinkedIn, your booking page, your contact details saved to their phone.

What to Link Your QR Code To

The most common options, in order of usefulness:

Your website or portfolio — Best for freelancers, designers, and developers. Link directly to your portfolio homepage or a specific landing page built for new contacts.

LinkedIn profile — Best for corporate networking events. Most people expect to connect on LinkedIn after meeting professionally.

vCard (contact card) — The most useful for the recipient. When scanned, it opens a "Save Contact" prompt with your name, phone, email, and company pre-filled. No typing required. This is the format that makes business cards actually useful.

A booking or scheduling link — Best for consultants, coaches, or anyone who wants meetings booked immediately. Link to Calendly, Cal.com, or similar.

WhatsApp Business — Common in India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Link directly to a WhatsApp chat with your number pre-loaded.

How to Generate a Business Card QR Code

  1. Go to the QR Code Generator
  2. Select the content type — URL, vCard, or WhatsApp depending on what you want to link to
  3. Enter your details
  4. Click Customize to set colors and dot style
  5. Click Generate
  6. Download as SVG for print (infinitely scalable, no pixelation)

Customization for Business Cards

Match your brand colors. Set the QR dot color to match your brand. Keep the background white or very light — dark backgrounds reduce scan reliability.

Use SVG format. Business cards are printed at high resolution. An SVG QR code is vector-based and will look sharp at any print size. PNG at 512px will look blurry on a physical card.

Choose dot style. Square dots are classic. Rounded dots have a softer, modern look. Both scan correctly — pick what fits your card's aesthetic.

Add a logo. The generator supports a central logo overlay. Keep it under 30% of the QR code area to preserve scannability.

Size on the card. Minimum 2cm × 2cm for reliable scanning at arm's length. 2.5cm × 2.5cm is more comfortable. Don't go smaller.

Scannability Rules

A QR code that looks good but doesn't scan is worse than no QR code — it creates frustration at exactly the wrong moment.

Maintain contrast. Light background, dark dots. Avoid dark-on-dark or low-contrast color combinations.

Keep the quiet zone. Leave white space around all four sides — at least 4 "modules" (the small squares). Designers often crop too tight when fitting a QR code into a card layout.

Test before printing. Scan your QR code from the design file (screenshot or PDF proof) before sending to print. Use the QR Code Scanner to verify it reads correctly.

Static vs Dynamic — Does It Matter for Business Cards?

A static QR code (what this generator creates) encodes the URL directly in the pattern. It always works, requires no account, and never expires.

The tradeoff: if the destination URL changes, the QR code on your printed cards is wrong. If your website URL, LinkedIn handle, or booking link is stable, static is fine. If you expect the destination to change (e.g., a campaign-specific page), use a dynamic QR code that can be redirected without reprinting.

For most business cards, static is the right choice.
