How to Flip an Image Online for Free — Mirror Horizontally or Vertically

You took a selfie and it's mirrored the wrong way. Or a logo needs to face the other direction. Or a scanned document came in flipped upside down. You need to flip the image — not rotate it — and you don't want to open Photoshop for a two-second fix.

Flip vs Rotate — What's the Difference?

These two operations look similar but do different things:

Flip (mirror) — creates a mirror image along an axis. The content is reflected, not turned.

  • Flip horizontal = left side becomes right side (like looking in a mirror)
  • Flip vertical = top becomes bottom (like turning a page upside down)

Rotate — turns the image by a set number of degrees around its center.

  • 90° clockwise, 180°, 270° — the image turns but is not mirrored

A selfie taken on a front camera needs a horizontal flip — the camera mirrors your face, so the result looks reversed. Rotating it 180° would turn it upside down, not fix the mirror effect.

How to Flip an Image Online

  1. Go to the Image Rotate & Flip tool
  2. Click or drag and drop your image (JPG, PNG, or WebP)
  3. Click Flip Horizontal to mirror left-to-right, or Flip Vertical to mirror top-to-bottom
  4. Download the flipped image

No account. No file upload to a server. Works on desktop and mobile.

When to Flip Horizontal

Selfies and front-camera photos — front cameras mirror the preview so you look natural while framing the shot. The saved image is already corrected on most phones, but some apps save the mirrored version. Flip horizontal to fix it.

Logos and icons — a logo facing left needs to face right for a layout. Flip it rather than recreating it.

Text in images — if scanned text or a sign appears backwards, a horizontal flip corrects it.

Profile photos — some layouts look better when the subject faces a specific direction. Flip to change which way they're looking without reshooting.

When to Flip Vertical

Upside-down scans — documents scanned face-down on a flatbed sometimes come out upside down. A vertical flip (or 180° rotation) corrects them.

Reflection effects — creating a water reflection or shadow effect by flipping the image vertically and placing it below the original.

Inverted UI assets — some icon sets expect a specific orientation; flipping vertically repositions them without editing the source file.

Can You Flip and Rotate Together?

Yes. The tool supports both operations independently — you can flip horizontal and then rotate 90° in the same session. The operations stack, so you can get any orientation you need in one step.

Supported Formats

  • JPG / JPEG — most photos from cameras and phones
  • PNG — screenshots, graphics with transparent backgrounds
  • WebP — modern web images

The output downloads in the same format as the input.

Is My Image Uploaded to a Server?

No. All flipping and rotation happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never sent to any server — it goes from your device to your screen without leaving your machine.
