# I Just Discovered OpenNVR β€” and This Is What Open Source Looks Like to Me πŸš€

I'm still pretty new to the world of software development.

I'm a first-year CSE student, currently exploring things like Python, AI/ML, backend development, Docker, and open source. And while learning, I recently came across a project that made me stop and think:

"Wait… people are actually building systems like this in open source?"

The project is OpenNVR.

🌐 Website: https://opennvr.org/

πŸ’» GitHub: https://github.com/open-nvr/open-nvr

At first, I thought it was just another security camera/NVR project.

But after looking deeper, I realized there is a lot more going on.

So, what is OpenNVR?

In simple terms, OpenNVR is an open-source platform for video surveillance and AI-powered video analysis.

It can work with cameras, handle video, record footage, and connect AI models to analyze what's happening in the video.

And this is the part I found particularly interesting.

Instead of thinking about it as just:

Camera β†’ Recording

it can become something more like:

Camera β†’ Video β†’ AI Detection β†’ Event β†’ Application/Automation

That opens up a lot of possibilities.

πŸ€– AI adapters

One of the things that caught my attention is the idea of AI adapters.

Instead of rebuilding an entire video surveillance system whenever you want to use a different AI model, you can create an adapter that connects your model to the OpenNVR ecosystem.

For someone learning AI/ML, this is interesting because it shows something I think is easy to miss when you're just learning individual technologies:

Building an AI model is only one part of building a real AI product.

You also need infrastructure around it.

🧩 Apps and events

Another interesting part is the application architecture.

Camera

Video
   ↓
AI detection
   ↓
Person detected
   ↓
Event
   ↓
Your application
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Now you could build applications around those events.

For example:

  • occupancy monitoring
  • restricted-area detection
  • people counting
  • safety monitoring
  • custom alerts
  • warehouse automation
  • other computer-vision workflows

The interesting thing is that the AI detection becomes a building block that other applications can use.

🐳 And then there's Docker...

This is actually where the project became even more interesting for me.

I'm currently learning Docker, and working with OpenNVR has made me realize that real-world software isn't just one Python file that you run.

There can be:

Frontend
Backend
Database
Video services
AI services
Storage
Networks
Multiple containers
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

all working together.

That is a completely different level of understanding compared to just writing small programs.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Why I'm sharing this

I'm still at the beginning of my tech journey, so I don't want to pretend that I completely understand the entire OpenNVR codebase.

Actually, that's exactly why I'm writing this.

I want to learn how projects like this are structured.

How does the video pipeline work?

How are AI models connected?

How do events move through the system?

How do all these Docker containers communicate?

And most importantly:

How do you go from an AI model to an actual product?

Open-source projects like this seem like a great way to learn those things by looking at real software instead of only following tutorials.

πŸ” I'd love to hear from the Dev.to community

If you've worked with OpenNVR, computer vision, NVR systems, AI video analytics, or similar open-source projects, I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts.

What do you think about the architecture?

What parts of the project should someone new to open source study first?

Are there interesting things in the codebase that I might be missing?

And if you're an experienced developer:

What would you look at first when exploring a project like this?

I'm just getting started with open source, so I'm hoping to learn from people who have been doing this much longer than I have.

If you know the project, take a look and let me know what you think.

I'm curious to hear what the community sees in it that a beginner like me might not see yet. πŸš€
