Warm the contact before you need anything

Most applications hit an inbox as an unrequested ticket. A cold query lands alongside hundreds of others, scanned by a parser that weights keywords over context. The hiring manager opens the profile with zero prior framing.

You can change this baseline by establishing presence weeks before you submit anything.

Find the engineering blogs, pull requests, or technical write-ups produced by the team you want to join. Read them. When a detail is unclear or spark an insight, leave a specific technical note. Not a generic compliment about their stack, but a concrete observation on a caching strategy, a migration edge case, or an API design choice.

Performative engagement is easy to spot. A one-line comment cheering on a company milestone reads like an automated growth hack. A substantive note about a trade-off in their recent architecture post reads like peer review.

When you finally submit your application or reach out directly, your name is already tied to a useful technical exchange. You are not starting the conversation from a blank slate. You are continuing one that started when you had nothing to ask for.
