I built a productivity app to spend less time using productivity apps 💀
Yep, the irony isn't lost on me.
Emails, tasks, meetings, deadlines... everything lives in a different place. And somehow, organizing all of it becomes another task.
So I built Leaves 🌿
A free, open-source, local-first desktop assistant that helps turn scattered commitments into an actual plan.
🍃 What does it do?
- 📩 Gmail → Tasks: Finds actionable tasks hiding in your emails.
- 🎯 Smart Prioritization: Scores tasks from 1–10 and explains why.
- 📅 Calendar Scheduling: Finds free time around meetings, working hours, and breaks.
- 🔎 Local Search: Indexes your selected notes and documents.
- 🔐 Local-first: Keeps working data on your device, with credentials stored securely.
The idea?
Less time organizing your life. More time actually living it.
🛠️ Under the hood
I built Leaves using:
- Tauri + React + TypeScript for the desktop app
- Python + FastAPI for the backend
- SQLite for local storage
- Gmail & Google Calendar APIs for integrations
One of the interesting challenges was bundling the Python backend into a standalone macOS app.
No Python, Node.js, or other development tools required to use it.
🚀 Try it out!
Leaves is currently available for macOS, completely free and open source.

Install with one command:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/singh-vidyush/Leaves/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
Note: The app is currently unsigned, and Google integration requires your own OAuth credentials. Setup instructions are in the README.
🌱 Help me grow Leaves
This is still an early release, and I'd love some genuine feedback.
Try it. Break it. Open an issue. Contribute a PR.
Or just tell me what you'd change.
One question: Would you trust an AI assistant to schedule tasks from your emails automatically, or would you prefer approving them first?
I'm genuinely curious.
Leaves 🌿 — Less planning. More living.
Now go touch some grass. :)
