As a second-year B.Tech student, I recently had the opportunity to complete an internship at IIT Delhi, where I worked on a Virtual Reality (VR) project under the guidance of Prof. Srinivasan Venkataraman.
This internship was one of the most valuable learning experiences of my academic journey so far, providing me with exposure to research, development, and real-world problem solving.
Getting Started
When I joined the internship, I had prior experience with Unity and game development projects, but working in a research-oriented environment was completely different from building personal projects.
The project involved Virtual Reality technologies and interactive systems, requiring attention to user experience, functionality, and technical implementation.
What I Learned
- Virtual Reality Development
Working on a VR project helped me gain practical exposure to:
VR interaction systems
User experience considerations in virtual environments
Interactive simulations
Unity-based VR workflows
- Research and Development Process
Unlike classroom assignments, research projects involve continuous iteration.
I learned how to:
Break down complex problems
Test multiple approaches
Analyze outcomes
Improve solutions through feedback
This process taught me patience and structured thinking.
- Collaboration and Communication
Another important lesson was learning how collaborative development works.
Regular discussions, feedback sessions, and reviews helped me understand the importance of:
Clear communication
Teamwork
Documentation
Receiving and implementing feedback
Challenges Faced
Every project comes with challenges.
Some of the challenges I encountered included:
Understanding unfamiliar systems and workflows
Debugging issues in Unity and VR environments
Optimizing interactions for better usability
Learning new concepts within limited time
Although these challenges were difficult initially, overcoming them helped me grow both technically and professionally.
Gratitude
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Srinivasan Venkataraman for providing me with this opportunity and for his guidance throughout the internship.
I am also thankful to my mentor Shivam Jaiswal and senior colleagues Anmol Goyal and Ankur Hooda for their support, mentorship, and valuable insights during the internship.
Looking Ahead
This internship strengthened my interest in:
Virtual Reality
Interactive Systems
Unity Development
Research-Oriented Projects
The experience not only improved my technical skills but also gave me a better understanding of how research and development are carried out in professional environments.
As I continue my journey in game development and immersive technologies, I look forward to applying these learnings to future projects and exploring new opportunities to grow.
Thank you for reading!
