As an AI video creator, I’m always looking for ways to reduce production costs.
Over the past few months, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole. I tried almost every AI video generator I could find that claimed to be “free” because I wanted to see how much I could actually save without sacrificing quality.
I tested everything from basic AI video generators to tools that promised free text-to-video generation. If you want to turn ideas and prompts into videos, there are plenty of options out there, including Text to Video AI. But after testing so many platforms, I came to a pretty simple conclusion:
Free AI video generation isn’t necessarily cheaper.
Some platforms give you a small amount of free credits when you sign up. That sounds great until you realize you can only generate a handful of videos before the credits are gone.
Others technically offer free generation, but the queue can be painfully slow. I’ve had videos sitting there for so long that I eventually stopped waiting. And then there are platforms where the generation speed is acceptable, but the output quality just isn’t good enough for the projects I’m working on.
The biggest cost ended up being something I didn’t expect: my time.
I spent hours testing different platforms, waiting for generations, comparing results, switching between tools, and trying to figure out which “free” option was actually usable.
At some point, I realized that saving a few dollars on generation wasn’t worth losing hours of my time.
Free vs. Cheap
I think AI creators sometimes focus too much on finding a $0 option.
But if you’re generating videos regularly, the better question might be:
What gives me the best result for the time and money I spend?
A tool that costs a small amount per second but generates quickly and consistently can be much more practical than a completely free tool that gives you a few credits, puts you in a long queue, or produces results you can’t actually use.
I’ve also found that having different AI video generation options in one place makes experimenting much easier. Instead of constantly signing up for different platforms and moving between tools, I can focus more on testing the actual video models and comparing their results.
That was the mindset that eventually changed how I choose AI video tools.
I stopped looking exclusively for “free” and started looking for good value.
What I’m Using Now
After trying so many different options, I’ve been using Textideo for a lot of my AI video generation.
What caught my attention is the overall cost. Compared with many of the other platforms I’ve tested, the generation cost is surprisingly low, especially considering the quality and range of models available.
It also gives me a convenient way to experiment with different types of AI video creation instead of relying on just one generation method. For example, image-to-video can be useful when I already have a character, product image, or scene that I want to animate.
For me, the important part isn’t simply finding the absolute cheapest tool. It’s finding something affordable enough that I don’t have to constantly worry about the cost of experimenting, while still getting results I can actually use.
You can check out Textideo’s AI video creation tools if you want to see what I mean.
I still test new AI video models and tools all the time. That’s part of being an AI creator — the landscape changes incredibly quickly.
But I’ve learned one thing from all that testing:
Don’t just ask whether an AI tool is free. Ask what your time is worth.
Sometimes paying a small amount for reliable AI video generation is actually the cheaper option.
