A lot of people assume solar panels basically shut off the moment clouds roll in. It's one of the most common reasons people in cloudier regions talk themselves out of going solar before even getting a quote. The real answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no.

The Short Answer

Solar panels keep working on cloudy days. They just produce less power, and how much less depends heavily on how thick the clouds actually are.

What the Numbers Actually Look Like

Panels don't only rely on direct sunlight. They also capture diffuse light, sunlight that's been scattered by clouds, dust, and moisture in the atmosphere. On a clear day, most of the light hitting a panel travels in a straight line from the sun. On a cloudy day, nearly all of it is diffuse, arriving from across the whole sky rather than one direction.

Real-world production numbers vary by how heavy the cloud cover is:

Light cloud cover or haze: 50 to 70 percent of rated output
Heavy overcast: 15 to 30 percent of rated output
Rain: 10 to 20 percent of rated output

A useful way to picture this: a 10kW system that would normally produce 40 kWh on a clear day might still produce 4 to 10 kWh on a fully overcast one, and 20 to 32 kWh on a partly cloudy day. That's not nothing. Over a full year, most solar companies already factor local weather patterns into their production estimates, so a system sized for a cloudy region already accounts for exactly this.

The Surprising Part: Clouds Can Sometimes Boost Output

This is the detail most people never hear. When sunlight passes near the edge of a cloud, it can briefly scatter and intensify, an effect sometimes called the edge effect. Some solar owners genuinely see short bursts of higher output on a partly cloudy day than on a completely clear one. It doesn't last long, but it's a real phenomenon, not a myth.

Why the UK Is the Best Proof of This

The UK is famously one of the cloudiest countries in Europe, ranked among the top for overcast skies, and yet more than 1.6 million homes there already have solar panels installed. If cloudy weather genuinely made solar impractical, that number wouldn't exist. It's proof that solar makes financial sense in far less sunny conditions than most people assume.

What Actually Affects Cloudy-Day Performance

A few factors make a real difference in how much power you get when the sky isn't clear:

Panel type: Monocrystalline panels generally handle diffuse light better than older polycrystalline designs.

Tilt angle: Lower, flatter tilt angles capture more scattered light from across the sky dome.

Cleanliness: Dust and dirt block some of that already-reduced light, so cloudy climates benefit even more from regular cleaning.

Battery storage: Storing extra power from sunnier days smooths out the dips from consecutive cloudy ones.

So Is Solar Worth It If You Live Somewhere Cloudy?

Usually, yes. The output difference between a sunny region and a moderately cloudy one is real, but it's a difference in degree, not a difference between working and not working. Annual production estimates already build in your local weather, so the quote you get is based on your actual climate, not a best-case scenario that quietly assumes wall-to-wall sunshine.
