How to Prove a WordPress Site Is Clean After the Rank Math Incident

Installing Rank Math PRO 3.0.124 can remove the known malicious plugin package. It cannot prove that the server is clean. The affected 3.0.123 package could place additional files, administrator accounts, scheduled tasks, and server-level changes. Rank Math tells sites that activated an affected copy to treat them as compromised.

The affected package window was October 15, 2026 at 20:02 UTC through October 16, 2026 at 07:12 UTC. The vendor released 3.0.124 as the clean replacement. Wordfence records the incident as CVE-2026-111862 and notes that the version alone does not prove compromise; the package source and activation window determine the response.

Define what clean means

A defensible clean claim has several components. The affected package must be absent or replaced from a verified source. The known database options must be gone. Hidden PHP, fake core files, executable .cache files, unauthorized administrators, and scheduled jobs must have been reviewed with a recorded scope. Credentials that could have been exposed should have a rotation status. The site should not recreate the incidents after normal traffic.

The evidence should be specific. "No malware found" is less useful than a list of paths, accounts, checksums, and tests. Record the scan tool and version, the time it ran, and whether it covered the host or only the WordPress directory. A successful scan can coexist with a missed persistence mechanism outside its scope.

Use the vendor's recovery sequence

For an affected site with a clean backup, restore the website and database from a point before the incident began. Scan the restored site, rotate exposed credentials, and install the clean plugin from the vendor account. For a site without a suitable backup, follow the vendor's order: remove the plugin folder and malicious options, block the domain, investigate other files and accounts, then rotate credentials and verify the result.

Do not treat the plugin update as a cleanup step that can happen in place of those actions. It is the final application artifact after the site is safe enough to run it. If the team is unsure about host files, SSH keys, processes, or permissions outside the website, involve the hosting provider or a qualified responder.

Add external evidence without overclaiming

ZoomEye can help identify Rank Math-related web assets that require an owner check. On October 28, 2026, the broader http.body="Rank Math" query returned 1,067,853 indexed web-content matches, the exact PRO phrase returned 46, and the reported attacker domain returned zero. These observations help scope a review of visible assets, but they cannot certify a clean website.

Use the external inventory to find domains outside the primary fleet or to confirm that the current page no longer contains a visible indicator. Keep the distinction between page visibility and host state. A site can be clean while showing no useful Rank Math marker, or visibly mention Rank Math while having no affected package. The query describes what the index can see.

Close with a verification record

Create a short record for the site owner and incident owner. It should state the package window decision, activation status, recovery method, credential rotation, host checks, checksum results, scan results, and post-recovery monitoring. Include exceptions and open unknowns. If a site used a shared hosting environment, name the host responsibility and the boundary between site and host checks.

Exercise the site after cleanup and repeat the key checks. A deleted backdoor that returns after a page visit shows that the generation path survived. A malicious administrator that reappears shows an account or server process issue. A clean result should use a test that would detect recurrence and distinguish that result from a quiet maintenance window.

The goal is to make the clean state reproducible. Another responder should be able to follow the record, see which evidence supported the conclusion, and understand which limitations remain. That standard protects users from a premature all-clear and gives the organization a reusable method for the next software supply-chain notice.
