There really isn't much to say about Skiff. Its story in a nutshell: it was founded in May 2020 by two young entrepreneurs aiming to build an alternative to Notion. It hit its peak between 2022 and 2023, growing rapidly. Then came the shock news on February 9, 2024: they were sold to Notion—the very company they set out to replace. By March 9, 2024, Skiff was gone for good.
That’s pretty much the entire history of Skiff.
Right now, I’m an 18-year-old aspiring developer and writer. I love building things, but as much as I enjoy coding, I love writing essays, stories, and taking notes. However, using Medium on my computer and the default Notes app on my phone is frustrating. Medium doesn't work well on mobile, and that Notes app isn't available on my PC.
To be honest, I was planning to build the exact vision Skiff set out to achieve. But when I discovered Skiff, I was deeply disappointed. They entered the market at the perfect time with an incredible product and immense potential, only to be acquired and shut down.
So I asked myself: "Why not learn from their mistakes and solve both my own problem and the problems of others?"
I realized I needed something fundamentally simple and logical to build upon: a real problem.
Here’s what I identified: First, most of these services store user data in plain text on their servers, which completely defeats privacy. I have a saying I really live by: "Privacy, confidentiality, and ownership are everyone's rights." Today, accessing privacy and confidentiality is possible, but it usually requires either money or advanced technical knowledge.
I decided to target this exact audience.
An easy-to-use, accessible, privacy-first note-taking app where the data belongs entirely to the user: TxtNote.
