I Missed Talking to Strangers, So I Built a Text-Only Chat Site

Some of my best conversations have been with people whose names I never learned.

Once, on a long train journey, I started chatting with the person sitting next to me. It began with something small, like where we were going. Then we kept talking for hours about work, family and life. When I got off, I felt lighter. We never swapped numbers, but I still remember that talk.

Another evening, I was sitting at a small chai stall when a stranger sat down on the same bench. Two cups of tea and a few easy words turned an ordinary evening into one I still think about.

Those moments taught me something simple. Sometimes it's easier to open up to someone who doesn't know you. There's no judgement, no history and no pressure.

*Why this is hard online
*

When I looked for that feeling online, I kept running into the same problems. Most apps want your phone number, photos and followers before you can say one word. Many random chat sites push you onto video, so you're on camera with someone you don't know. And a lot of them are full of spam and bots.

I wanted the opposite: open a page, say hi, and talk.

So I built Stranger Talk

Stranger Talk is a free, text-only chat site for adults. A few things I decided early on:

  • Text only. No video or voice, so nobody is ever on camera.
  • No long sign-up. You can start as a guest and save an account later if you want to keep your friends.
  • Rooms for real interests. Besides 1-on-1 random chat, there are rooms by city, language (Hindi and other Indian languages), topic and fandom.
  • Safety first. You can block or report anyone with one tap. Every report comes to me, and random chats aren't stored long after they end.

I'm not a big company. I built it on my own, with AI tools helping me write the code, and I keep improving it based on what people ask for.

What I've learned so far

People don't want more features. They want to feel safe, and they want the other person to actually reply. Most of my work now goes into those two things: keeping out spam and bad actors, and making it easy to find someone who wants to talk.

Want to try it?

If you've ever had a great conversation with a stranger and wished the internet felt like that, give it a try at strangertalk.in. And if something feels off, tell me. I read every message.
