If you're a freelancer in India earning through platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Toptal — or working directly with clients — understanding GST compliance is essential. Here's your complete guide.
When Do Freelancers Need GST Registration?
| Situation | Registration Required? |
|---|---|
| Annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs | Yes, mandatory |
| Providing services to clients outside India | Yes, mandatory (regardless of turnover) |
| Receiving payments via platforms that deduct TDS | Yes, mandatory |
| Turnover below ₹20 lakhs, domestic clients only | Optional |
Important: Many freelancers working on international platforms earn in foreign currency. This counts as export of services and requires mandatory GST registration regardless of turnover.
GST Rate for Freelance Services
Most freelance services — IT/software, content writing, design, digital marketing, consulting — attract 18% GST under SAC codes 9983xx.
Zero-Rated Exports with LUT
If your clients are outside India, you can export services at zero GST by filing a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) on the GST portal. This saves you from blocking funds in refund claims.
Conditions for export:
- You (supplier) must be in India
- Recipient must be outside India
- Payment in convertible foreign exchange
- LUT valid for one financial year — renew annually
Input Tax Credit (ITC)
As a registered freelancer, claim ITC on:
- Laptops, computers, peripherals
- Software subscriptions (Adobe, AWS, etc.)
- Internet and phone bills (business portion)
- Co-working space rent
- Professional development courses
Filing Requirements
| Return | Frequency | Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 | Monthly/Quarterly | 11th/13th |
| GSTR-3B | Monthly/Quarterly | 20th |
| GSTR-9 | Annual | 31st December |
Freelancers with turnover up to ₹5 crore can opt for quarterly filing (QRMP scheme).
