A developer from 2015 and a developer from 2026 might have the same job title, but are they developing the same skills?
Today, you can open Claude Code, describe what you want, accept a few changes, and ship an entire feature without fully understanding how it works.
And that's what got me thinking.
If Claude writes the code, makes the architectural decisions, and fixes the bugs, what exactly is the developer bringing to the table?
AI has made development faster. There's no denying that.
But are we getting better at engineering, or just better at getting AI to do the engineering for us?
I'm not saying vibe coding is bad. I'm questioning what happens to our ability to think through problems, make technical decisions, and understand why a particular solution works.
If Claude Code disappeared tomorrow, how many of us could still build what we're building today?
Genuinely curious to hear both sides. Especially from developers who've worked both before and after AI coding tools.
