How do you show you can ship software before anyone has paid you to? You build something, put it where people can see it, and write down what broke.
Marketing has the same problem, and engineers moving into it tend to assume it works differently. It doesn’t. The missing “client” is a smaller obstacle than it looks, because most of the tooling for marketing experiments is open to anyone.
The reframe
Treat a practice project like a small experiment with instrumentation. A reader evaluating your work is, in effect, asking three questions. Can you frame a problem? Can you execute? Can you tell whether it worked?
A client’s name answers none of those directly. A documented experiment answers all three.
A project template that translates well
If you’ve written a postmortem, this will look familiar:
Goal: one measurable objective, such as improving the share of visitors who complete one action on a page you own
Hypothesis: what you expect to change, and why
Action: exactly what you did, in order
Evidence: the metrics you tracked and where they came from
Lesson: what you would change on the next iteration
If any of the five is missing, the project is incomplete.
Where to run it
A page, blog or channel you own, for SEO, content and conversion tests
A spec plan for a local business, labelled as practice and not as client work
A volunteer project, done with permission
A public teardown that uses only visible information
The measurement caveat
This is where analytical readers have an edge. Small projects produce small samples, and small samples are noisy. If a page gets modest traffic, a difference between two variants may be nothing. Say so in the write-up. State the sample size, state what you can and can’t conclude, and avoid declaring a winner from thin data.
Attribution is similarly messy. If several things changed at once, you cannot credit one of them. Writing down what you couldn’t isolate is part of the evidence, and it signals that you understand how measurement works.
Tools, including AI
Free analytics and search tools can show traffic, queries and conversions on anything you control. AI tools can speed up research and drafting. The check is the same as for code you didn’t write: if you can’t explain it without the tool open, you don’t own it yet.
Label it honestly
Practice work should be described as practice. Calling it client work tends to unravel when someone asks about budget, approvals or stakeholder feedback. A self-initiated project explained clearly holds up better.
Is it a fit?
Marketing rewards continuous testing and learning, and it doesn’t suit everyone. If you’d rather avoid ambiguity or ongoing experimentation, it can be frustrating. A self-evaluation before committing to any course is sensible. The Impact Digital Marketing Career Assessment, from Impact Digital Marketing Institute, is a short career-fit check you can take before you decide. It’s a decision tool, not a promise of any role or outcome.
If you’ve made the jump from engineering into marketing, or you’re considering it, what would your first experiment be, and what would you measure?
