I’ve built two self-hosted developer products and listed them on Gumroad, but I’m still figuring out how to reach people who will actually pay for them.
One is CodeGuard AI, an AI-powered GitHub PR reviewer. The other is ResumeIQ AI, an AI resume analyzer.
Both are sold as source code, not hosted SaaS products.
I’m curious about the business side of building software:
- Where do people find their first paying customers?
- Which channels have actually worked for selling source code?
- What do buyers expect beyond the code itself?
- Is it better to keep selling the source code or eventually turn the product into SaaS?
For developers who have sold source code, boilerplates, templates, or developer tools: what helped you get your first few sales?
I’d especially appreciate real experiences and lessons from things that didn’t work. I want to learn how to build a sustainable business around software, not just keep shipping projects.
