Selling Through Seal: The Renewal Is a Platform Event

Merchants on Seal run subscriptions inside Shopify's gravity, which shapes their failure profile in specific ways: renewals ride the store's checkout trust, cards live in Shopify's vault world, and the customer's mental model of the charge is the store's name, not a billing platform's. When a renewal fails, the fix has to arrive wearing the store's brand or it reads as a stranger asking for card details.

The failure mix skews the familiar way, expiry, timing, issuer caution, but the communication surface is narrower than on open platforms: the merchant's levers are the messages and pages they control around the platform's machinery. That makes sequencing the whole game: native attempts accounted for, conducted attempts in the gaps, card-update requests in the store's voice from the first failure, not the third.

A branch guide to Seal subscriptions dunning, what the platform handles natively, where its merchants' renewals actually break, and what a conducted layer may and may not do inside the platform's rules, is the map we wished existed when we first read a Seal store's failure report.
